BOOK - My Ancestor Was A Woman At War
By Emma Jolly
Published by Society of Genealogists, London, UK, 2014

Softcover... 24.95 (C$)
This book aims to explore the wide range of roles undertaken by women during wartime. A useful aid in tracing a female ancestors military career, the book also considers wider research into the role of women at war, with a particular emphasis on the Victorian era and the First and Second World Wars.

With numerous fascinating case studies, and a very useful guide to available records and sources, this book is an essential read for any family historian with a female military ancestor or indeed an interest in military history. "Some women may have served in different organisations in one war, for example, or have served in both world wars. Researching female ancestors at war requires a different approach from that of standard military history research; flexibility and dedication. This guide will help".

About the author:
Emma Jolly is a professional genealogist and writer, and a member of the Society of Genealogists, the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives and the Families in British India Society.
"I am a professional genealogist and author. I specializes in writing history. My work has been published in a variety of journals. Current publications are Family History For Kids (PQ Publishing, 2007), Tracing Your British Indian Ancestors (Pen & Sword, 2012), and Tracing You Ancestors Using the Census (Pen and Sword, 2013). My latest book, My Ancestor was a Woman at War, was published by the Society of Genealogists in January 2014.

Women often did more in wars than is popularly assumed. My book is intended to explore women's roles in the past and even if your ancestor did not serve officially, there were other areas in which she may have worked. During war, women worked in the roles left by men who had entered the armed forces; these roles include working in mines, on farms, in factories, in transport, in civil defence and at home, These women made an invaluable contribution to the war effort".
