District Marriage Registers and District Vital Records ![]() ![]() 1786-1870 What Are The District Marriage/Vital Records & Why Are They Important? More District Marriage/Vital Record Books More Ontario Resources | More Canadian Resources BOOK - Vol 1: Niagara District Vital Records 1792 - 1869 By Dan Walker & Fawne Stratford-Devai Published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2000-2005 (cd version 2013)
The Vital Records of Upper Canada/Canada West series is designed as a critical companion series to the District Marriage Registers of Upper Canada/Canada West. Clergy of the Anglican and Roman Catholic faiths were not required to submit marriage records to the District clerks for inclusion in the District Marriage Registers, though many Anglicans and Catholics who married by other churches/circuit riders are included. This new series includes both Anglican and Roman Catholic vital records as well as other denominations. The original Niagara District Marriage Register does not survive. In an attempt to capture some of this lost early information for the district, Dan Walker and Fawne Stratford-Devai, with the help of Marilyn Jackson and Brenda Young have begun to assemble and publish all existing vital records (early birth, baptism, death and burial records as well as similar yet unknown vital records) for the Niagara District. An example of some of the towns and townships where events occurred and were reported in the Niagara District Vital Records transcriptios include: Niagara township, St. Catharines, Chippawa, Thorold township, Caistor township, Stamford, Moulton township, Grimsby, Louth township, the Falls, Crowland township, Gainsborough, Grantham, Humberstone, Newark (now Niagara-on-the-Lake), the town of Niagara, Queenston, Pelham township, Rainham township, Stamford township, Wainfleet township, the town of Dundas, Walpole township, Trafalgar, Saltfleet, the Grand River, Nelson township, Glanford township, Clinton township, Ancaster and many more areas not noted in the records. When searching for vital records keep in mind that many returns were submitted by ministers who were circuit riders who often performed baptisms, marriages and burials at great distance from their home bases. Circuit riders reported where they lived which was not necessarily in the same District where the ceremony took place. That said, if you cannot find the record in the Niagara District you would be well advised to search bordering districts such as the Gore District and the Talbot District. 8.5" X 11" (coil-bound edition) Maps Index Published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2000-2005 (cd version 2013)
