This recording of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Cemetery (on Lot 15, Concession 9, of the Township of Huntley, Carleton County, Ontario) was performed by Donald E. Read, James R. Kennedy and Donald W. Kelly on May 27th, 1979. On June 2nd and 14th, 1979, a double check was completed of the inscriptions on all 215 stones. Indebtedness is due to Donald E. Read for the photographs, and to Barbara McLauchlan for the typing of this publication. The first Catholic emigrants of Huntley Township, families, came in 1820 and 1822 from Richmond, Ontario. Their numbers were trebled by the arrival of Peter Robinson's Settlers to the number of 30 or 40 in 1823 and 1824. The Robinson group came from Ireland. The Manion's and Kennedy's came to Huntley from Richmond prior to the main Irish influx of 1823. These early settlers formed the original congregation of St. Michael's Roman Catholic parish in Huntley Township. In 1837, the parishioners sent a "memorial" or petition to the infamous lieutenant governor of Upper Canada Sir Francis Bond Head. They begged to inform him that they had a church built and wanted lot 15, concession 8 as a glebe for the support of a priest. From the petition of February, 1837, we know that a log church had been built by that date. Contents include:
