BOOK - Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Cemeteries (Old and New Cemeteries), Wolfe Island, Frontenac County, Ontario Genealogy & History Resources By Fern Small & Ken Collins of the Ottawa Branch, Ontario Genealogical Society Originally published by Ottawa Branch, Ontario Genealogical Society, 1976 This reprint published by Global Heritage Press, Ottawa, 2019
Transcriptions of the memorial stones in this cemetery were recorded by Ottawa Branch of The Ontario Genealogical Society volunteers Fern Small and Ken Collins in the summer of 1976 and first published in late 1976. Dolly Allen, transcribed the original book into a computer file in 2000. Ms. Allen's version is what is providd in this book, along with copies of the original plot plan maps. Sacred Heart Parish of Wolfe Island has two cemeteries. The older one is behind or west of the present church by approximately 1000 yards. The current cemetery is across the road from the church and to the south. Copies of the deeds covering the transactions for these properties are included in this book. The original name given to the Roman Catholic church was 'Church of the Sacred Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary'. The OLD cemetery was abandoned because of a rock ledge which gradually slopes upward until it is just below the surface of the ground. The memorial stones utilize about one-quarter of the cemetery area. "The cemetery is now [1976] completely covered with trees, dense brush and shrubs". The oldest burial appears to be in 1847. The eldest person recorded on the Old Cemetery is a McNiff who died in 1896 at the age of 92 years. The earliest birth recorded is a Mosier who died in 1868, recorded as being born c1774. The inscriptions on the memorials in this old cemetery gave a wealth of genealogical information. These Wolfe Islanders came from nearly every county in Ireland - Clare, Fermanagh, Queen's, Monaghan, Limerick, Wexford, Armagh, Kilkenny, Antrim, Cavan, Tipperary, Roscannon and Cork. A few came from the shires of England and Scotland, i.e. Somerset and Inverness. Another was an army officer, a Ronald McDONELL who came from Glengarry. The NEW cemetery "is well cared for [1976] and is laid out in a neat and orderly fashion. At the time of recording there were 174 memorials with some 493 inscriptions thereon". The earliest birthdate recorded is a Kavanaugh born in 1808 and died in 1908. She had both the earliest birthdate of anyone buried there, and also was the oldest, i.e. 100 years of age. There are instances of some graves being removed from the old cemetery to this one together with the appropriate tombstone. In one or two instances a new stone was erected without removing the original one from the old cemetery. Contents include:
