Coilbound Edition

This book was originally published in 1974 by the Ottawa Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. This is a facsimile edition of the original 1974 book.

Though this book is an Index to birth, marriage and death information that was published in the Bytown Packet from Sept 4 1846 to 1849, it is more than just a nominal index. Much important information is included with each entry. Abbreviations were used extensively. A complete table of abbreviations used in this book is included.

This index has been compiled from the microfilm reels on file in the Newspaper Room of Library and Archives Canada (LAC). The film includes issues filed in Library and Archives Canada, Library of Parliament, and Ottawa Public Library, but there are numerous issues missing and others are damaged. Therefore the records in this book do not include all items which originally appeared in the newspaper, which at this period was a weekly.

It is well to stress that this is an index, and that the additional information is provided for the purposes of identification. Much more information is frequently given in the original printed item; For example: name of a relative at whose home the event occurred, birth place in the origin country, etc.

Here is an example what you can expect from an entry:
    M Ag 28 1847 BIGGS, Catherine, d.late G.W., Bellview, Tipp.Ire. to J.D., s. W. Vanstone, Hacketstn., Carlow, Ire.
By checking the table of abbreviations on page 6 you will be able to translate this Index entry to read:
Married, August 28, 1847 [that is the date of the newspaper issue not the date of marriage], BIGGS Catherine, daughter of the late G. W. BIGGS. Born in Bellevue Townland, County Tipperary, Ireland. married J. D. Vanstone, son of W. Vanstone. Born Hacketstown, County Carlow, Ireland.
Oftentimes more information is available in the original printing of the notice in the Bytown Packet which you can access from the microfilm. Should you decide to go the next step and use this book as an index to the microfilm, you can save yourself a lot of time and effort by being able to go directly to the entry that interests you, rather than reading through miles of microfilm to find it.

Contents include:
  • Introduction
  • The book is organized alphabetically by surname, then by given name, eliminating a need for an index
