Lochiel Township is located in the northern portion of Glengarry County in Eastern Ontario. Prior to 1820, Protestants had no church at Lochiel. The closest Protestant Church at that time was St. Andrew's Church at Williamstown. That changed when Rev. John McLaurin came out from Breadlebane, Scotland in 1820. He immediately began to build a small wooden church (kirk) on the East Hill. As a result of the erection of the church, the district became known unofficially as Kirk Hill or Kirkhill. In 1822 the first sacrament in Lochiel was celebrated in the open air because the church building was not yet complete.
The church has been variably known over the last 190+ years as: "Lochiel Church of Scotland"; "Old Kirk"; "St. Columba Church of Scotland"; and "St. Columba Presbyterian Church". All are one and the same.
This book is a faithful transcription of baptisms and marriages that were recorded in the original church registers. Of special interest to family historians is that in addition to the the date of baptism, the baptism records also include the date of birth of the child, the full names of the parents (including maiden names of mothers), and the parents' address (most). Oddly, some baptism records that include a date of birth sometimes were recorded without a baptism date. Marriage entries include the names of the groom and bride, date of marriage, whether by licence or proclomation, and where each is from. A few of the entries include the occupation of the groom.

Regarding reprint quality - GlobalGenealogy.com Inc. acquired the publishing rights for MacDonald Research Centre holdings after the passing of its founder and primary transcriber/compiler, Duncan MacDonald. This book has been reprinted as it was prepared by Mr. MacDonald, without further corrections or additions. We reproduced the original work in as good as, or better quality than when originally published. MaacDonald created the original manuscript on a typewriter with a later master made on a photocopier. We cleaned up the surviving master as best as was possible without re-keying all of the content. Mr. MacDonald made frequent “informal” updates to his masters, usually by stroking a line though an entry or word, then handwriting the new or changed information into the margin. Those notations remain in this edition as done by McDonald. The result is a book that is useful and complete, but of a print quality that reflects the technology of the time in which it was originally published.

NOTE about print quality:
GlobalGenealogy.com acquired MacDonald Research Centre after the passing of its founder and primary transcriber/compiler, Duncan MacDonald. We are pleased to make his books available under the new MacDonald Research imprint. Each book has been reprinted as it was prepared by Mr. MacDonald, without corrections or additions. Modern technology helped us reproduce the original work in as-good-as, or better quality as that which was originally published. Much of MacDonald's original work was created on a typewriter. His well-worn "masters" were made on a photocopier. We've cleaned them up as much as possible without re-keying all of the content resulting in books that are useful and complete, but of a print quality that reflects the technology of the time in which they were orignally published.
