Much has been written concerning the services and sacrifices of the people of Upper Canada (Ontario) during the War of 1812-1814, but the subject has been dealt with most frequently in a broad and general way. The author presents a more intimate view by relating the experiences of individual participants in one of the most tragic acts of the drama of those years - The Battle of Chippawa.

The author explains in the Preface that he relied on oral tradition that was handed down through the families since 1814, but that "the old traditions have been carefully justified by official and other contemporary records and in all particulars wherein such collaboration was possible. Any distortion of historical facts has been carefully avoided". The old families mentioned were from the Townships of Stamford, Thorold, and Pelham.
