Index of People [other than the primary person] Although the content of the books is organized alphabetically by surname of the primary person, there is also an "Index of People" in which you will find the names of people with surnames other than that of the primary person who are mentioned in the announcement. This includes maiden names of married women, names of parents-in-law and sons-in-law, sometimes, names of maternal grandparents etc. By using this index, you may be able to identify connections between your family member and the other people featured in the notice. Index of Places [mentioned in notices] The author expended much labour in the preparation of the "Index of Places", which includes pointers to citations that include mentions of locations in Canada, the USA, Britain and other countries, that are mentioned in the notices. Volume 02 - Death Notices from the Christian Guardian 1851-1860
Volume 03 - More Notices from Methodist Papers 1830-1857 [Births, Marriages, Deaths] This book contains birth, marriage, and death notices from: The Wesleyan, 1840-1843; The Christian Messenger, 1844-1847; The Evangelist, 1848 and 1851; The Canada Christian Advocate, 1845-1857; also notices from the sole surviving issues of two other papers. Included are the birth notices that were published in the Christian Guardian between 1830 and 1857, and a small number of Christian Guardian death notices from the early 1830s. Most of the material, though, is from The Canada Christian Advocate which was published for a longer period and more frequently than any of the papers of the smaller Methodist groups.
Volume 04 - Obituaries from Ontario's Christian Guardian, 1861 - 1870 Ontario is the main geographical area covered. There are references to all the settled parts of Ontario from Windsor and the shore of Lake Huron east to Cornwall and Pembroke. Quite a few of the deaths recorded are for people who lived in the Quebec portion of the Ottawa Valley, or in the vicinity of Montreal, Sherbrooke, or Quebec city. There are also a number of obituaries for people who had emigrated to the United States and died there.
Volume 05 - Death Notices from the Canada Christian Advocate, 1858 - 1872 For the most part, the people for whom these notices were published were probably well-known in their communities. They were not necessarily Methodists. They might have been members of other religious groups or of none.
Volume 6 - More Notices from Ontario's Methodist Papers, 1858 - 1872 The book is organized alphabetically two sections -- Births (41 pages) and Deaths (remainder of the book). It focuses on the newspapers that serviced The Primitive Methodists and the Bible Christians. However 2 more years (1871-1872) of death data from The Christian Guardian newspaper are also included. The Birth section contains data from all the methodist papers of Canada.
Volume 7 - Obituaries from Ontario's Christian Guardian 1873 - 1880 The material is a transcription of death notices and obituaries as well as data gleaned from the news sections of The Christian Guardian. Tbe vast majority of the references are to people wbo lived in Ontario or Quebec. However, tbere are also many references to Manitoba and British Columbia, and a few to pioneers in the area tbat became Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Volume 8 - Obituaries from the Canada Christian Advocate 1873 - 1884 The death data in this volume is of three types; brief death notices from the births, marriages, and deaths column; items from the news columns; obituaries. Obituaries tend to have the most information, often biographical.
Volume 9 - More Obituaries from Ontario's Methodist Papers, 1873 - 1884 Most of the material in this volume is transcriptions of death notices and obituaries as well as data gleaned from the news sections of the Christian Guardian. The remaining half is from the papers of 3 small Methodist groups: The Evangelistic Witness (New Connexion); The Christian Journal (Primitive Methodist); The Bible Christian Observer.
Volume 10 - Obituaries From The Christian Guardian, 1884 to 1890 The material is a transcription of death notices and obituaries as well as data gleaned from the news sections of The Christian Gurdian. Tbe vast majority of tbe references are to people wbo lived in Ontario or Quebec.
