Like many such newly sprung industrial towns of the mid to late 1800s, it was populated by an imported French Canadian labour force. Couture was of this stock. The presentation will trace his poverty stricken beginnings and concentrate mostly on his colourful contributions to life in Aylmer, Quebec including his many contributions to the Ottawa daily newspapers in the 1940s to 1950s, most especially in his role as president and founder of the Aylmer Cow Watchers' Society. The Cow Watchers was an invention of his which provided a satirical vehicle through which he commented on events of the day.

The Ontario Genealogical Society Conference 2013, Oahawa, ON
Theme: Pulling Up Stakes, Putting Down Roots This year’s conference will include a number of presentations about migration routes and transportation methods. When our ancestors decided to “pull up stakes” and leave their homelands, they had to consider the land, sea (and later air) routes that were available to them. Safety, cost, length of trip, comfort, seasonal changes and other practical considerations often influenced their choice of destination and port of entry. Some were part of group migrations in which their travel was organized for them. Many arrived to “put down roots” in their new homeland only after serious hardship, and some never did arrive at their intended destinations. These presentations will help you to find records for your immigrant ancestors, and to understand what their lives were like.
Hosted by the Durham Region Branch The Ontario Genealogical Society. Where: The joint campus of Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Details: Official Conference 2013 web site; program brochure.
