BOOK - Life in a Victorian Workhouse - Pitkin Guide [United Kingdom]
By Peter Higginbotham
Published by The History Press, Gloucestershire, UK (2011)
The author examines how workhouses came into being, what life was like for men, women and children on the wrong side of the poverty line, and how social attitudes evolved through the momentous events of Victorian Britain into the 20th century. Illustrated from contemporary and modern sources, this fact-filled guide presents an intriguing picture of a world of steam engines, self-help, service and salvation - where workhouse life, and workhouse reform, influenced attitudes and services we now take for granted.

BOOK - Sheffield Workhouse [England]
By Michelle Higgs
Published by The History Press, Gloucestershire, UK (2011)
The records of the Sheffield Workhouse were destroyed in the bombing of Sheffield during the Second World War. However, using archive material, newspaper reports and the remaining Guardians’ minutes from 1890, this book reveals the full story of this feared local institution. Concentrating on the fascinating history of Sheffield’s main workhouse, which moved from West Bar to Kelham Street and then to Fir Vale, as well as on the strange and wonderful history of the city’s workhouse schools and farms, Sheffield Workhouse will captivate residents and visitors alike.

BOOK - Workhouses Of The Midlands [England]
By Peter Higginbotham
Published by The History Press, Gloucestershire, UK (2007)
Many former workhouse buildings have vanished; the survivors, ironically, have often been converted into luxurious houses and flats, and their original purpose forgotten. Yet the memory of the nightmarish austerity of the workhouses, as well as the inmates who lived and laboured there, has never faded. Featuring more than 100 evocative images of workhouses from across the Midlands, from Derbyshire all the way through to Oxfordshire, this book provides a rare pictorial record of both. With section providing detailed histories of the establishment in each area, this book illustrates almost every facet of the evolution of the workhouse in The Midlands.

BOOK - Life in the Victorian & Edwardian Workhouse [United Kingdom]
By Michelle Higgs
Published by The History Press, Gloucestershire, UK (2007)
This book establishes a true picture of what life was like in a workhouse, of why inmates entered them and of what they had to endure in their day-to-day routine. A comprehensive overview of the workshouse system gives a real and compelling insight into social and moral reasons behind their growth in the Victorian era, while the kind of distinctions that were drawn between inmates are looked into, which, along with the social stigma of having been a workhouse inmate, tell us much about class attitudes of the time. The book also looks at living conditions and duties of the staff who, in many ways, were prisoners of the workhouse. Michelle Higgs combines thorough research with a fresh outlook on a crucial period in British history, and in doing so paints a vivid portrait of an era and its social standards that continues to fascinate, and tells us much about the society we live in today. .

Genealogy "Summer Camp", Toronto, ON
Sponsor/Organizer: Toronto Branch, Ontario Genealogical Society
Genealogy "Summer Camp" is a unique program (for adults) that brings out-of-town family historians to Toronto for an intensive week of tutorials and hands-on research at the many archives and reference libraries in the city. If you have ancestors from Toronto or other parts of Ontario, there are many resources here for you. Local family historians are also welcome to participate as "day campers". We take full advantage of Toronto's great public transit system, and we keep the group small to allow lots of help from our local experts. We'll help you spend more time finding information about your ancestors-and less time finding the archives. This will be our 16th Summer Camp. More than 125 participants from England, right across Canada and many US states have attended the 15 previous Summer Camps-some more than once!
Applications should be received by 11 June 2012.
