1921 Census of Canada was released online August 8th.... and it's free!
Posted 07 August 2013 --- UPDATED on August 08 & 13th, 2013
By Rick Roberts

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) released the 1921 Canadian Census via's website on August 8th at 2pm. The entire 1921 census is available, with a geographic index, free of charge on Contrary to concerns of many, the agreement between Library and Archives Canada and ensure that the 1921 census of Canada will remain free for everyone to use whether or not they have a paid Ancestry subscription membership.

Here is more background from information provided by our contact LAC:
"Ancestry should be releasing a full nominal index this fall. This index will be available to their subscribers for 3 years. After that, LAC will get a copy and will make it available for free off of our census platform that was entirely redesigned recently.

As you know, it's too bad we couldn't make it available on June 1st. But that being acknowledged, I think we can celebrate the fact that the 1921 census will be on-line and fully indexed in a matter of weeks rather than the six years it took for the 1911 one. Practice makes better!"
Update: LAC to responds to questions asked by our readers:
"After 3 years, the census and the nominal index goes back to LAC's free site. Access to the census will always be free, whether on Ancestry or LAC."
