J. Brian Gilchrist awarded Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal

Posted 04 February 2013
By Rick Roberts

This past Sunday, J. Brian Gilchrist, a popular and long-serving genealogy educator and archivist was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for "contributions to genealogy and local heritage, having inspired people not only in Canada, but indeed around the world".

Brian is a fourth-generation Torontonian and a ninth-generation Canadian who graduated in History from the University of Toronto. He has been a frequent guest on radio and television, as well as the founder and member of many genealogical, archival, and heritage organizations. He also serves as an expert witness in Ontario on matters of genealogy, inheritance and cemetery issues.

Many of our readers have met or know Brian personally, and many more have benefited from his always entertaining and highly informative lectures.

Brian's interest in genealogy and history began early. He started family history research at the age of ten, and made his first research visit to the Archives of Ontario at age thirteen. That was in 1969. In the years since, thousands of family history enthusiasts have learned much from J. Brian Gilchrist.

We offer Brian our hearty congratulations for this well deserved recognition.
