Published by Provincial Parliament, Montreal, 1849
This edition published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2013

A comprehensive source for names of the claimants and their losses during the Rebellion of 1837-38 in Upper Canada including subsequent restitution amounts or rejection of claims in whole or in part. Some years ago we purchased a forty eight page document originally printed in 1849, that lists the individual claimants by their name, the amount of their claim in currency (sums claimed), the amount paid (sums allowed) or denied (rejected altogether) and the District in which the claimant resided. The Johnstown District claims include "Nature of Claim" and "remarks". Those entries shine much light on which side of the conflict that the claimants sympathized with along with details of ownership or personal information. More information

BOOK - The Pioneers of Old Ontario
By W. L. Smith
Originally published by George N. Morang, Toronto, 1923
This edition published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2006 (CD 2010)

In 1897 Smith began a series of trips through rural Ontario with to obtaining first-hand settlement information from its residents. He found a "warehouse" of information was carried in the memories of men and women - memories that went back to the days of the virgin forest, of log cabins surrounded by blackened stumps in the midst of scanty clearings, of bush trails and corduroy roads over which settlers toiled with their grists to distant mills, of old-time logging bees, and of the circuit riders who carried the Gospel message to those real heroes. This book is the result of that effort. ISBN: 1-897210-90-6 (Hardcover)   More information

BOOK - History of the Settlement of Upper Canada, With Special Reference to The Bay of Quinte [Ontario]
By William Canniff
Originally published by Dudley & Burns, Ontario, 1869
This edition by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2008, 2011 (CD 2011)

This book grew from modest beginnings into a comprehensive history. The author originally accepted the responsibility to assemble a paper on the topic of the settlement of the Bay of Quinte Region. The "paper grew into a book which went far beyond the history of the settlement of the Bay of Quinte Region. As the work proceeded, Canniff soon realized that in order to prepare a book about the settlement of the Bay of Quinte Region, one had to discuss many topics that concerned the entire province. The final result was this substantial and highly regarded book, which provides an informed insight into the history of the entire province as it was known in 1869 with a focus on the the Bay of Quinte region. BOOKS - District Marriage Registers and District Vital Records of Upper Canada, 1786-1870
By Dan Walker and Fawne Stratford-Devai
Published by Global Heritage Press, Milton
During the early period of settlement in Upper Canada and Canada West (the province of Ontario), all ministers who performed marriages with the exception of Anglican and Roman Catholic ministers were required to send in returns to the Clerk of the Peace for the District. That said, plenty of Anglicans and Catholics were married by nonconformist ministers for reasons explained further on. The majority of returns begin in the 1830s with a few Districts containing earlier marriage returns. The Clerk of the Peace then recorded the returns in a District register kept in the District office. Most of the original District Registers survive and have been reliably transcribed and indexed into a series of books. It is important to keep in mind that the Register is a copy made by the District Clerk. The returns themselves are the closest record to the original parish record that exists. For some Districts the individual original marriage returns from Ministers have also survived and in some instances contain lists of baptisms and burials performed by the minister. Though the 1849 date for conversion to the county system was precise, some clerks continued to add to the District Marriage Registers for decades after the conversion resulting in some District Marriage Register entries being made as late as 1870. Available in printed and digital formats. More Information...

BOOKS - County Marriage Registers of Ontario 1858-1869, Second Edition.
By Elizabeth Hancocks C. G. & W. E. Britnell
Published by Global Heritage Press, Milton
Legislation was passed in 1857 to that required registration of all marriages performed by all clergymen in the Province of Canada West (Ontario) resulting in the "County Marriage Registers". They were to begin on January 1, 1858 and finish on July 1, 1869. Some counties started early, including marriages performed before 1858, and some include marriages performed in the later months of 1869. These books are more than just an indexes of the original registers. Most volumes contain transcriptions of names, dates and places and oftentimes, ages of bride and groom, and names of parents. The first 37 volumes were compiled by Elizabeth Handcocks & William Britnell, and published by Generation Press between 1979 and 2000. This Second Edition of the County Marriage Registers of Ontario 1858-1869 was published by Global Heritage Press in 2005. The 38th volume was compiled by Donald A. McKenzie and was published by Global Heritage Press in 2008. These books are published as one volume per county. The exception is the city of 'Toronto' which is a single volume on its own. Available in printed and digital formats.

BOOKS - Surrogate Court Index of Ontario, Canada, 1859-1900 ( Wills)- Second Edition
Compiled by June Gibson, Indexed by Elizabeth Hancocks, C. G. & Shannon Hancocks
Published by Global Heritage Press, Milton
Wills and the documents that contribute to the process of distributing the estate of an individual can be a wonderful source of information about the deceased, their family and those who survived. The books in the Surrogate Court Index of Ontario, Canada 1859-1900 series are designed to assist researchers in finding death and estate information for those who died in Ontario from the middle to the end of the nineteenth century. Specifically, this index covers Estate Files dated between 1859-1900. The death may have occurred months or even years before the date that the estate was finalized. Many times the estate of the deceased may not have been settled until the death of a spouse. Estate Files are of great interest because of the bounty of detailed information that they contain about the deceased, and about those who survive. The Surrogate Court used the documents in order to disperse the deceased's estate, whether he/she died with (testate) or without (intestate) a Will. Available in printed and digital formats. BOOKS - Ontario Photographers Lists, Vol 1 & 2
By Glenn Phillips
Published by Global Heritage Press, Milton 2003, 2010
Invaluable guides to help you identify the place and date when a photograph was taken. Many family history researchers have boxes of photographs, but do not know who is depicted in the photo nor when or where it was taken. These books list individual photographers, where they worked and when. That means that if you have a photograph that includes a photographer's stamp or other identification you can easily find out when and where that picture was taken. Oftentimes that will help you to identify who is in the picture. Both volumes are organized alphabetically by municipality. However, a comprehensive index is also included. Historical place names have been kept. More information

BOOK - Smith's Canadian Gazetteer of Canada West, 1846 [Upper Canada, Ontario]
By WM. H. Smith
Originally published by H & W Rowsell, Toronto, 1846
This edition published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 1999, 2010 [CD 2010]
The primary purpose of a gazetteer, for many modern researchers, is to identify a place by name, its location, and to learn some details about the place, as they were known at the time that the gazetteer was compiled. This book serves that purpose very well, being the first major work of its kind in Canada West, a region that was previously known as Upper Canada (pre-1841), and later named Ontario (1867). BOOK - A Collection of Lanark County, Ontario Marriage Records 1817-1967
By Peter Andersen
Published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2015
Nearly three decades ago, Peter Andersen extracted and recorded marriage records from the church registers of a long list of Lanark County churches of various faiths. He also compiled lists of Strays -- marriages of Lanark County natives who married outside of the county, or in other churches. Extracts of marriage notifications published in the Lanark Observer newspaper (Lanark Village) have been included in this collection. These seven hundred pages of marriage records have been built into a single searchable digital file that is bookmarked by the name of the source and date range of records contained within each section. (e.g. Perth Presbyterian Church 1817-1857). Being able to search through all 41 sets of records with a single search is especially helpful when you are not sure of where, when, or in which church that a marriage was solemnized. The collection includes about 84,000 individual names of brides, grooms, and named witnesses who participated in solemnizing approximately 14,000 marriages between 1817 and 1967. BOOK - Pioneer History of the County of Lanark
By J. S. McGill
At the close of the war of 1812-14, the British government was faced with two major problems. Unemployment and industrial depressions at home, and an uneasy peace with the Americans abroad. Upper Canada was still vulnerable to invasion and it was thought the interior should be settled as a second line of defense against further hostilities. In Britain work had to be found for unemployed tradesmen and discharged soldiers. An emigration scheme was put into action to settle the great wilderness north and west of the Rideau River which flows into the Ottawa. From Scotland came soldiers and their families in 1815 to found the Perth military settlement, followed by tradesmen and their families. The subsequent years brought more Scots, followed by Peter Robinson's Irish Immigrants in 1823. The land was part of the Precambrian Shield, oldest rock in the world, and only some of it was fit for agriculture. The remainder grew timber but much was swamp and rocky hillock. This book is the story of the strong-willed pioneers who loved this land and did their best with it. The author has has included much family history as well as some early ship passenger lists. After more than forty years since it was originally written, this humble little book remains the best published history of Lanark County. ISBN 0-9690087-1-6    More information

BOOKS - The Lanark Era - Births, Marriages and Deaths, In Three Volumes
By Peter E. Andersen
Published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 1998-2003
These three volumes contain transcriptions of births, marriages and deaths taken from original newspapers and microfilm of surviving issues of The Lanark Era from 1895 to 1936. Also includes transcriptions regarding returning WWI soldiers, and many who did not. The Lanark Era did an exceptional job of publishing useful information about early local families and also information about those who left Lanark. When volumes one and two were compiled, there were missing issues. Some years later, copies of the "missing issues" were discovered in a private collection. That enabled the third book in the series -- The Missing Years. The combined 3 volumes contain information on more than 45,000 individuals.     More information including indexes

BOOK - Cheese Stakes, Lanark County's Mammoth Cheese and its Place in Cheesemaking History    (Lanark County, Ontario)
By Ron W. Shaw
Published by Global Heritage Press, Ottawa, 2017
Cheese Stakes explores the nineteenth century story of the Lanark County Mammoth Cheese in the context of its place in a long tradition of oversized cheeses, and examines the remarkable, never to be repeated, achievement it represented in the annals of the cheesemakers' art. On April 25, 1893, the largest cheddar cheese ever manufactured anywhere in the world arrived on the grounds of the World's Columbian Exhibition at Jackson Park, Chicago, Illinois. Pressed seven months earlier in a Canadian Pacific Railway Company freight shed at Perth, Ontario, as it travelled to Chicago its massive 22,000 pounds weight snapped the railway car truss rods four times, its casing attracted a mass of graffiti and, as it was dragged into its exhibit space, the 'Canadian Mite' crashed through the floor of the Dairy Pavilion. Purchased by Britain's most prominent cheesemongers, it was transported to England and paraded through the streets of London, cut with a garden spade, and eaten by English consumers. Cheese Stakes is an essential read for those with an interest in the agricultural roots of Ontario; cheesemaking history, and in the individuals who were amoung the cast of characters who played a role in the great adventure of the Lanark County Mammoth Cheese. By Josephine Smith
Originally published by author, 1901

She tells the story of the Perth military settlement from its beginning, then explores its early development by mixing history with fictionalized accounts of actual events and people. Having written the book in the closing years of the 19th century, the author had personal access to first-hand accounts from some of the original settlers and many their children. More information

BOOK - Historic Hastings - Volume One with New Introduction and Expanded Index
By Gerald E. Boyce
First edition published by Hastings County Council, Belleville, 1967
This second edition published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2013

Originally published in 1967 to document the settlement and local history of Hastings County in Ontario, Canada up to 1966, this fine work has been long out of print. Author, Author Gerry Boyce writes "With 8,000 copies in circulation, one could presume that there would be no need for a reprint. Such is not the case. The book has been out of print for several years, but prices for used copies (sometimes in poor condition) have risen dramatically". Historic Hastings has stood the test of time -- as highly regarded today as when originally published. Readers and family history researchers will appreciate the new and expanded index in this edition. Larry McQuoid and the Quinte Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society contributed an improved and greatly expanded index to which the author has added additional entries for the new content in this edition. The original index in the 1967 edition excluded many family names listed in the chapters on individual municipalities, the new index includes all these names. This certainly will benefit genealogists. Generously illustrated with period photographs and maps. ISBN 978-0-9809110-8-4 (hardcover) More information (including the new index)

BOOK - Sketches Illustrating The Early Settlement and History of Glengarry in Canada
By J. A. MacDonell
Originally published Wm Foster, Brown & Co., Montreal, 1893
This edition published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2010

J. A. MacDonell recognized that much had been written on the subject of United Empire Loyalist settlement in Ontario, the War of 1812-14, and the Rebellion of 1837-8, but expressed concern that there was little mention made of the part that the Highlanders of Glengarry played in those conflicts. He corrects that oversight within the 29 chapters that comprise this formitable text. This book is an fine source of information for those interested in early settlement of the Highlanders in Glengarry and surrounding counties, and the role that they played in the American Revolution, United Empire Loyalist migration and settlement, War of 1812, and the Rebellion of 1837-38. BOOK - Births, Marriages and Deaths from Morrisburg (Ontario) Newspapers, 1874-1877
By Jack Schecter & Robert Whitteker
This publication is a transcription of births, marriages and deaths from surviving Morrisburg newspapers, largely from 1874 to 1877 plus a few transcriptions from 1879. Morrisburg is the largest community in Dundas County, Ontario and is located on the St. Lawrence River in Williamsburg Township, thirty miles from Cornwall. Newspapers in nineteenth century Ontario were characterized by frequent changes of names and ownership including the Morrisburg papers. The Morrisburg Banner, founded in 1859 and published in Prescott, was the first newspaper in Morrisburg but it lasted only a short time. The next newspaper published in the community, was The Dundas Courier, which ran from February 24, 1863 to November 24, 1899. Another Morrisburg newspaper was The Herald and St. Lawrence Reporter. The Courier whose starting date is unknown may have lasted until 1889. Documented evidence of the exact date of the final issue remains elusive. The successor to The Courier was The Morrisburg Leader which is still published today. The transcriptions in this book were recorded from original copies of two of the Morrisburg newspapers - The Dundas Herald and St. Lawrence Reporter and The Courier. These appear to be the only surviving "run" of newspapers from Dundas County before the 1890's period.     More information

BOOK - History of the Settlement of Upper Canada, With Special Reference to The Bay of Quinte [Ontario]
By William Canniff
Originally published by Dudley & Burns, Ontario, 1869
This edition published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2008, 2011 (CD 2011)

Midland District Marriage Register
To date no one has been able to locate the original Midland District Marriage Register. The district was originally bounded to the east by a line running north from the mouth of the Gananoque River and to the west by a line running north from the mouth of the Trent River. The district town was Kingston. In 1798, the district was reorganized to consist of the counties of Addington, Frontenac, Hastings, Lennox, and Prince Edward. In 1831, Prince Edward County was separated from Midland District to form Prince Edward District. In 1837, Hastings County was split off to form Victoria District. In 1849, the district was replaced by Frontenac and Lennox and Addington counties.

When searching for marriages recorded in District Marriage Registers keep in mind that many returns were submitted by ministers who were circuit riders who often performed marriages at great distance from their home bases. Circuit riders reported marriages in the register of the District where they lived which was not necessarily in the same District where the marriage took place. That said, those with ancestors who resided in the Midland District would be well advised to check the Indexes for the District Marriage Registes for the bordering districts: Johnstown District and the Bathurst District. Be sure to also check the parish registers for the churches that were in the area at the time that your ancestor resided there.

BOOK - Haldimand County Marriage and Burial Registers, 1851 - 1865
By Dan Walker, Fawne Stratford-Devai
Published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2001 (CD 2011)
Haldimand County began separate registers for marriages and burials in 1851. This transcription includes records from the "1851 registers" which cover the period of 1851-1865. At first glance, one might think that the marriages included in this register for the 1858-1865 period are duplicates of those recorded in the "County Marriage Registers" which were used between 1858 and 1869. There are marriages in this earlier "1851 register" which are were not recorded in the "County Marriage Registers 1858-1869" and vice versa. It is important to check both registers. BOOK - Reminiscences of the Early History of Galt and the Settlement of Dumfries in the Province of Ontario
By James Young
Originally published by Hunter, Rose and Company, Toronto, 1880
This edition published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2009

Young's writing and research skills are evident in this captivating local history of the town of Galt and its surrounding neighborhood. The time period covered is from immediately prior to the arrival of European settlers until 1880. Galt, once an independant municipality, was amalgamated with the towns of Hespeller, Preston and the settlement of Blair into a single legal entity under a new name of Cambridge in 1973. Galt covers the largest portion of Cambridge, taking up the southern half of the city. After 130 years, James Young's history is still considered to be an essential resource for everyone who has an interest in the settlement and early development of Galt.

By Dan Walker & Fawne Stratford-Devai
Published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2000 (CD 2011)
Following the move from a district to a county system of local government in mid 19th century Ontario, counties became responsible for recording all marriages within their boundaries. Talbot brokered a "special" deal with the crown that provided him with a bounty of free land in return for settling pioneers in the southwest portion of present-day Ontario. BOOK - Historical Sketches of the County of Elgin
Originally published by The Elgin Historical and Scientific Institute, St. Thomas, Ontario, 1895
This edition published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2009

Historical Sketches of the County of Elgin provides the reader with a fact-filled early account of the history of present-day Elgin County and the town of St. Thomas. The authors discuss events beginning with native settlements and conflict, and move forward through the period of French explorers, British invasion and settlement up to 1895, the year that the book was originally published. A significant portion of the text is dedicated to the period when Colonel Thomas Talbot administered much of southwestern Ontario and organized British settlement. Talbot's administration was considered by many to be despotic. However, under his "rule" the area became one of the most prosperous parts of the province. This book is an essential read for everyone with an interest in the history and settlement of Elgin County. ISBN: 978-1-926797-01-4     More information

However, the language, writing style and composition are of course becoming quite dated. Prior to the reprinting of this edition, the book had lacked an index. This new feature will help historians utilize the source in a more efficient manner. ISBN 978-1-926797-14-4 (hardcover)     More information

BOOK - Lincoln at Bay, A Sketch of 1814
By Ernest Green [1923]
New Index by Brenda Young [2009]
Originally published by Tribune-Telegraph Press, Welland, 1923.
This edition published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2009 (CD 2010)

Much has been written concerning the services and sacrifices of the people of Upper Canada (Ontario) during the War of 1812-1814. The author presents an intimate view by relating the experiences of individual participants in one of the most tragic acts of the drama of those years - The Battle of Chippawa. The author explains in the Preface that he relied on oral tradition that was handed down through the families since 1814, but that "the old traditions have been carefully justified by official and other contenporary records and in all particulars wherein such collaboration was possible. Any distorion of historical facts has been carefully avoided". The old families mentioned were from the Townships of Stamford, Thorold, and Pelham.

BOOK - The Genealogy Do-over Workbook
By Thomas MacEntee
Published by Unlock the Past, Australia, 2016
Back in December 2014, Thomas MacEntee made the big accouncement online saying that "Genealogy and I are parting ways. Done. Finished. Game over." While many people took that that to mean he was leaving the genealogy community or closing down his genealogy business, he then clarified what he meant by "leaving". Starting in 2015 Thomas decided to set aside his 20+ years of genealogy research aside, and started over. From scratch. If you think it's time for a genealogy makeover, or better yet a Genealogy Do-over, this workbook will take you step by step though the process he followed with his own research throughout 2015.

Printed and bound in Canada by GlobalGenealogy.com Inc., Milton, 2015

From a phone conference to a week long event, a family reunion is a time to gather and share. According to Wikipedia: "A typical family reunion will assemble grandparents, great-grandparents and up for a meal, some recreation and discussion. The older attendees are generally grandparents, parents, siblings or first cousins while the youngest could be second, third or fourth cousins. It is also not uncommon for regular family reunions to be sponsored by family organizations or family associations centered on a more distant common ancestor or a commonly shared surname". That said, whether you are planning a large event or a small casual get-together, a successful family reunion requires careful planning and execution. This booklet will help you plan a successful reunion for your family, reducing your stress and resulting in a memorable reunion that your extended family will enjoy and appreciate. BOOK - Guide to Wolfram|Alpha for Genealogy and Family History Research
By Thomas MacEntee
Published by Unlock the Past, St Agnes, Australia, 2014
Most genealogists and family historians these days are familiar with a variety of search engines used to locate information on the internet. The process is pretty straight forward: you enter your search terms, and you get back a list of links to relevant websites. But what if there were a search engine that allowed queries in the form of a question and, in fact, preferred that format? You could classify the resulting search engine as more of an answer engine that anything else. And what if you could take the concept one step further and have this answer engine calculate information based on set input parameters? Well such a search engine does exist: Wolfram|Alpha. What sets this computational engine apart from other search engines is the ability to pull data from websites outside of Wolfram|Alpha) that are selected for their data reliability and sources. BOOK - Solving Riddles in 19th Century Photo Albums
By Graham Jaunay
Published by Unlock the Past, St Agnes, Australia, 2011
Many people mistakenly think that the photography process has been around for a very long time. This is of course untrue and indeed the pictures in your heirloom photo album are unlikely to predate the 1860s. Photographs came in many forms in the nineteenth century and this book assists the reader to identify each type, as this is an essential dating indicator. The booklet then addresses in great detail the other characteristics of photographs with examples to assist the reader in dating the item - the mount itself, the material printed on the back of the photograph, the composition of the photograph including the pose of people depicted and the clothes being worn by the people depicted. This booklet also addresses the issues related to preserving your photographs for the enjoyment of future generations. ISBN 9780980874662     More Information

BOOK - Cracking the Code of Old Handwriting
By Graham Jaunay
Published by Unlock the Past, St Agnes, Australia, 2011
Sooner or later, family historians will come across a major obstacle in progressing their research - old handwriting can be difficult to resolve and this booklet is designed to overcome some of these problems. The problem rests on the fact that most of us unknowingly read by identifying whole words by their shape rather than looking at individual letters. When we come across unfamiliar writing, we are forced to look at the individual letters in their context. The unexpected shapes of old letters and a multitude of shortcuts in writing results in considerable difficulties for modern readers, and this booklet provides some strategies to overcome this problem. There are a number of books on this subject, but, apart from the practical advice within, a strength of this publication lies in the number of actual examples to help the researcher identify seemingly meaningless words. BOOK - Pitfalls in Family History
By Graham Jaunay
Published by Unlock the Past, St Agnes, Australia, 2012
This booklet outlines some of the issues that throw up barriers to family history research. What is a pitfall? Look it up in a dictionary and you will find that it is defined as ... a concealed pit as trap for man or animal, an unsuspected difficulty or danger or an error into which it is easy to fall. Somewhere there may be a family historian who claims never to have encountered a pitfall in their research, but most of us, if we're honest, will admit to being bruised all over by the number of falls we've taken whilst our family trees have been growing. By reading this booklet you will be more aware of many of the pitfalls waiting to entrap you! ISBN 9781921956102     More Information

Instead it offers entirely new research tools - more information to augment the documents and oral histories - as well as a way of testing family trees, to see if conclusions drawn are confirmed by this new evidence. This book shows you how you can use DNA to harness this exciting new range of genealogical tools. This publication provides a contextual understanding of DNA suitable for genealogists and discusses the currently available tests that are likely to be of interest to family historians, especially those wanting to prove (or disprove) compiled family trees, the connect 'new' relatives by means of inherited genetic material and to draw conclusions about where we fit into the greater human family. Fenian Raids 1866-1871:
The Fenian raids were attacks by members of the Fenian Brotherhood based in the United States, on British army forts, customs posts and other targets in Canada in order to bring pressure on Britain to withdraw from Ireland, between 1866 and 1871. Most of the raids were successfully repelled by British forces and local militias. While the U.S. authorities arrested the men and confiscated their arms afterwards, there is speculation that many in US government had turned a blind eye to the preparations for the invasion..

Rebellions of 1837-1838:
The Lower Canada (Quebec) and Upper Canada (Ontario) rebellions of the late 1830's were an effort by a dedicated few to turn the British provinces of North America into a republic or republics. After unsuccessful bids for control of power, a few of the rebels were hanged or transported, but most were eventually pardoned. As a direct result of the uprisings, Lord Durham, was assigned to report on the grievances among the colonists and find a way to appease them. His report eventually led to greater autonomy in the Canadian colonies, and the union of Upper and Lower Canada into the Province of Canada in 1840.

BOOK - Sketches Illustrating The Early Settlement and History of Glengarry in Canada
By J. A. MacDonell.
J. A. MacDonell recognized that much had been written on the subject of United Empire Loyalist settlement in Ontario, the War of 1812-14, and the Rebellion of 1837-8, but expressed concern that there was little mention made of the part that the Highlanders of Glengarry played in those conflicts.

American Revolution / United Empire Loyalists:
In response to protests in Boston over the British Parliament's attempts to maintain authority over its North American colonies, the British mobilized its army to put down the rebellion. Consequently the rebels formed militias of like-minded individuals to face the British military and to 'discourage' those colonial citizens who wished to remain loyal to the crown. Fighting broke out in 1775, offically ending in 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Surviving Loyalists needed to find refuge outside of the United States. The movement of United Empire Loyalists to Canada was a critical event in the settlement of what later became Canada. Loyalists settled throughout the present-day Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Ontario. Their descendants migrated throughout Canada and beyond.

BOOK - A Short Service History and Master Roll of James Rogers' 2nd Battalion, King's Rangers
By Gavin K. Watt
Published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2015
After more than thirty years of studying the loyalist regiments that served in Quebec during the American Revolution, author Gavin k. Watt concluded that Major James Rogers’ 2nd battalion, King’s Rangers was sadly overlooked and required additional attention. There are two main sections to this book. First is a brief service history of the 2nd battalion from its creation in 1779 until disbandment in 1783. Second – by consulting original and secondary sources, Watt prepared a Master Roll of three hundred and fifty-eight men listing alternate spellings of surnames and given names, rank, enlistment date, company, service details, age, height, place of origin, trade, wife and family, and place of settlement. Of course, not all of these details could be found for every man, but the roll is pleasingly complete. In 1784, Rogers led a party of disbanded King's Rangers and their families to the Third Township of Cataraqui, later known as the Township of Fredericksburgh, in Lennox County, Ontario, where they were granted land. BOOK - Loyalist Refugees, Non-Military Refugees in Quebec 1776-1784 - Second Edition
By Gavin K. Watt
Published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2016
Soldiers did not come alone. In the past, wives, mothers, fathers, grandparents, sisters, brothers and children of the fighting men have been given secondary treatment. In Loyalist Refugees, they are the subjects of a study describing the systematic persecution that forced so many to seek refuge in Quebec. How these unfortunate people were housed, fed, clothed and employed is examined, as is their desperate unhappiness and discontent. This book identifies and lists details for more than 2,000 non-military loyalist refugees who sheltered in lower Quebec during the American Revolution—pointing researchers to crucial primary and secondary sources in Canada, the USA, and the UK. Many if not most of these refugees migrated to places across British North America and beyond, after their period of sanctuary in Quebec.
