Search Tips
Our search tool is a keyword search engine. It will search every word that is contained in it's database of webpages from the Global Genealogy & History Store website for any search terms entered. The search result is then sorted by your choice of Sort By.
Listed below are some of the ways you can refine your search using our search engine.
- Boolean expressions
You can combine the Boolean operators - AND, OR, NOT - with your search words. Search example:
You have several choices which you can combine in various ways when using the Advanced Search Tool:
Match menu
Select "Any" to search for web pages that contain one, some or all of the required words. e.g. entering Middlesex census matching Any will find files which contain either Middlesex or files which have census, or both.
Select "All" to search for web pages that contain every one of the required words. e.g. entering Middlesex census matching All will retrieve only files which have both Middlesex and census (but not necessarily in this phrase)
Format menu
Select, from the Format menu, whether you want a lengthy account of each hit ("long") or just a brief summary ("short")
- "long" - search results display as titles, plus a paragraph quoting where the search word appears, and the file URL
- "short" - search results display as hot-linked titles
Sort By menu
Select, from the Sort By menu, to choose how you want the results of your search to be listed
- "Score" - The search result is sorted and graded with the strongest match to your search criteria listed first.
- "Time" - The search result is sorted with the most recently added pages listed first.
- "Title" - The search result is sorted alphabetically by the title of the web page, "A" appearing first.
- "Reverse Score" - The search result is sorted and graded with the weakest match to your search criteria listed first.
- "Reverse Time" - The search result is sorted with the oldest pages listed first.
- "Reverse Title" - The search result is sorted alphabetically by the title of the web page, "Z" appearing first.
Unfortunately this engine searches for words only - you cannot search for a phrase. Use an "and" instead, or select ALL from the Match Menu.
