Can I set up a reusable template in the Book feature of FTM?
Of my existing books produced using Family Tree Maker (12 of them), I have one that I like using as a template for the others. Is there any way to use one as a template for a new one, without having to
cut and paste from the old one?? I still want to retain the old one. The reason for doing this, I have 50 - 70 pages I like repeating in each of my books.

Answer:
Unfortunately there is no "formal" template in the current or earlier versions of Family Tree Maker. It's a good idea. As a result of your email I've sent the idea to the FTM design team as a suggestion for future development .
Sorry I don't have better news.
However, a work-around comes to mind. You could create an "Unrelated Individual",
then put the 70 pages of notes into that Unrelated Individual's Notes field so it can be used in the book feature of FTM, for any of your books.
The steps are:
Save the Template to an "Unrelated Individual"
To create a record for an Unrelated Individual, click on PEOPLE then click on
ADD UNRELATED INDIVIDUAL. Name the person something like " Book Template" .
Then type or paste the 70 pages (you can go up to 240 pages in version 16) into the
notes field for Mr. "Book Template".
Using the Template in any FTM Book
When you are creating a book and want to use that 70 page template, while in the
book feature, use the FTM index to locate the "person" "Template, Book". That will bring the
note field for that unrelated individual to the top of the left-hand side of the screen,
where you choose items to include in your book. You can then drag that
"Notes for Book Template" into your book/s and edit it to your hearts content.
Editing those notes in the book feature will not alter the original notes.
That means that you can use that same template over and over.
Changing The Notes in The Template
If you want to edit the original notes (change the notes in the template), go
out of the book feature, use the index to locate the family record for
"Template, Book", go to his Notes and make whatever changes are needed.
It's a bit of an abstract way of dealing with the problem, but it will work for a single template document of up to 240 pages. This solution is only effective for Family Tree Maker 2006 or Family Tree Maker Version 16 and newer.
Hope this helps :)
