It's Our History, Our Country - The All Red Route and the REO
Published: 01 November 2010
By: Ronald Wolf   Biography & Archived Articles

Ronald Wolf Our time-travelling adventure starts with 45-year-old Thomas Wilby (1867-1923), a freelance writer and 46 year-old Jack Haney(1889-1935), a driver/auto mechanic, who took a 1912 REO (named after its founder Rasom Eli Olds) automobile on a famous trip across Canada which turned into The All Red Route. All Canadian routes were coloured red on maps at the time, hence the name The All Red Route.

The route started in Nova Scotia and ended 4,427 kms later in British Columbia. This 52-day trip, which ended on October 15, 1912, was a public relations ploy to prove to the Canadian automobile population that it was the REO that had what it took for reliability and getting the best bang for their automobile bucks.

Now, you might say 52 days is a long road trip but it can be exciting and you would have a valid point. The duo had no coffee shops to get a much needed caffeine buzz or get stuffed on fast food that we today take so much for granted. There were few provincial roads in those days, so they weren't slowed by road construction crews. There were definitely no drivers engulfed with road rage to slow the duo down on their automotive quest.

The REO would go as fast as 25 to 30 mph and sported a 30-35 horse power engine. The REO could sit four people with a roof that stayed in place most of the time.

The car had to be hand cranked to start. It didn't even have windows to keep out the weather. No radio, DVDs, music, was on board to keep these men of adventure occupied in their bone-shaking, head-pounding road trip into history.

This adventure and so many others like it make our country great. After all, it is our history, our country.
