Will your Family Tree Maker software run on Windows 8?

Posted 13 November 2012
By Rick Roberts,   Biography & Archived Articles

Windows 8 was launched to great fanfare on October 26, 2012. Initial reviews have been mostly positive which is encouraging considering that this is the biggest design change in Windows ever. Most new PCs are now being delivered with Win 8 installed.

We are receiving emails and phone calls from concerned Family Tree Maker users who want to know if their FTM 2012 will run on the new Windows 8 operating system.

We checked with Family Tree Maker and have been assured that FTM 2012 is completely compatible with Windows 8 (as well as XP, Vista and Win 7). They did not confirm that any earlier versions (pre FTM 2012) are compatible with Windows 8. We suspect that some recent earlier versions of FTM may run on the new Windows 8 operating system but we don't have Windows 8 machines to test them on.

For those who are unaware of the news, there will not be a Family Tree Maker 2013. FTM have extended the life of FTM 2012 for the 2013 year. That means that those who have a registered copy of FTM 2012 will recieve free online updates that include new features and updates that would have been included in FTM 2013. That appeals to my frugal nature.
