Update: Save Library & Archives Canada
Posted 11 February 2012
By Gerry Glavin

Today, at the British Isles Family History Society's monthly meeting, we had a presentation on this subject by one of the Professional Officers of the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) on the subject of the Library & Archives [Canada] plans for downsizing and the narrowing of the role and collection activities of Library & Archives Canada (LAC). She made an appeal to send a letter to both Minister James Moore and Dr. Daniel Caron, Librarian & Archivist of Canada.

I will be sending the following by mail. The CAUT website has an explanation and an eMail link to both of these people, but I think a personal letter may be more effective.

TAKE ACTION TO SAVE LAC

Voice your concern about the current downsizing of specialized staff and collections at Library & Archives Canada by writing a letter or eMail to:

The Hon. James Moore
Minister of Canadian Heritage & Official Languages
House of Commons
Ottawa, Ontario
K1A 0A6

Dr. Daniel Caron
Library & Archives of Canada
395 Wellington Street
Ottawa Ontario
K1A 0N4

Dear ___________________

I am writing to add my voice to those who are seriously concerned about what is happening at Library and Archives Canada (LAC). Canadians - be they researchers, authors, documentarians, historians, families tracking their genealogies, librarians, francophones, allophones, recent immigrants or Indigenous community members - have come to rely upon the services and collections offered by Libraries and Archives Canada based in Canada's National Capital Region. I have used the services and collections of LAC for personal searches on my grandfather and his family, my father and his family, and historical documents relating to the NorthWest Mounted Police. I know of people who have travelled to the National Capital Region for similar research and to consult other research resources in the area. Original documentation is critical to good research.

Points of concern
  • Amend the Library and Archives of Canada Act to more clearly specify LAC's obligation to maintain a comprehensive, publicly accessible collection of Canada's documentary heritage in one geographic location, the National Capital Region
  • Ensure funding required to fulfill this obligation
  • Restore LAC's full acquisition of published material and archival acquisitions
  • Restore public services, including access to archivists and librarians; access to the general reference collection; and re-establishment of specialist archivist positions
  • End fragmentation of collections resulting from decentralization
  • continue and enhance the digital/ on-line access to the collection.
Preservation of our country's historical and intellectual heritage is not something we can afford to sacrifice.

Yours truly,

Gerald M. Glavin
