Ontario Genealogical Society Invited To Share Concerns with Federal Liberal Caucus Posted 21 December 2011 By Rick Roberts, Biography & Archived Articles The following is a verbatim posting of a notice distributed to members of the Ontario Genealogical Society (OGS) today. Recent invitations by the federal Liberal Party caucus have demonstrated an interest in issues that are important to genealogists. If a similar initiative from the Harper Government, official opposition, or other federal parties follows, we will give them equal space. One of the many worthwhile benefits of joining a provincial genealogical society is to add weight to their efforts to have the interests of the family history community heard. [Rick Roberts, GlobalGenealogy.com] From the Ontario Genealogical Society: : OGS is invited for a second time to present their views to a Liberal Party Caucus
December 20, 2011Recently, the Ontario Genealogical Society received another invitation from the office of Liberal MP, Jim Karygiannis (Scarborough-Agincourt), to present, to a Liberal Committee. You may recall our announcement regarding the previous such invitation at the end of August. This time, in response to requests from OGS and other community organizations to receive visits in their own communities, the Liberal Party of Canada held the meeting in Mississauga on Saturday December 10th, 2011. While the Liberal Party has third party status at the moment, their repeat invitation seemed like a good opportunity to make the concerns of genealogists known. Past President Don Hinchley once again attended to make our presentation regarding the two federal level issues that concern OGS: the census and the cataloguing of our publications. OGS members are aware of the value of the information contained in a census and Don impressed upon the Liberal Party the need to work for the release of the 1921 Census as scheduled, the removal of the negative option on future censuses and the reinstatement of the long form census. Don also drew attention to recent decisions made by the Canadian Cataloguing in Publication (CIP) program. The CIP program will issue an ISBN number but will not catalogue publications with an initial print run of less than 100 copies. This decision has a serious impact on the OGS and other small print run publishers. If a publication is not catalogued by the CIP program, libraries and researchers will not be aware of the material. This will negatively impact sales and prevent these resources from reaching the public. Our concerns about the Census were shared by MP and former Minister for National Defense John McCallum (Markham- Unionville) who has done extensive research using census data in the past. Also, Liberal Party VP Communications for Hamilton Centre, Ralph Wilson, expressed particular interest in our concerns with the Cataloguing in Publications program. The OGS thanks Don for his efforts and he and the Society will continue to follow up with the Liberal party on these topics. We are investigating presentations to the other federal parties as well.
