By Helen Osborn, Pharos Teaching & Tutoring

Pharos provides unique help for family historians with innovatory new courses

Hannah Baker, B.A. (Hons) History, PGCE, has joined the Pharos teaching team. With many years of teaching experience and a degree in Medieval History, Hannah brings a lot of experience to Pharos Tutors. Hannah will be teaching a brand new course, entitled "Climbing Trees: How to get children interested in family history".

Most people with a love of family history know how exciting discovering the lives of their ancestors is. Bringing this to life for children is a great way to share it. The course explains how to get young minds past the pages of records and data, and into a living, breathing world of the past.

Pharos Teaching & Tutoring started only 4 years ago with just five courses and three teachers and is pleased to announce that 2010 will see a programme of over 30 courses with even more in the process of development. There is something for everyone, with an expanded list of subjects and time periods. All Pharos courses are short, reasonably priced and designed to fit in with busy lifestyles. BOOK - History of Berkshire  by: Judith Hunter. Berkshire came into existence more than a thousand years ago. At that time a buffer zone, fought over by the Saxon kingdoms of Mercia and Wessex, by 1086, when Domesday Book was compiled, Berkshire had taken on the shape it was to retain until 1974. Through the local government and reorganisation of that year it lost its ancient heartland, the Vale of the White Horse, but gained the southern tip of Buckinghamshire. Today, further restructuring threatens the new county with a loss of identity; which gives timely topicality to the publication of this long awaited account, in which Dr. Hunter tells the story of all the Berkshires, old and new.   More information

BOOK - A History of Buckinghamshire, by Micheal Reed. The effects of fields, farms, and enclosures, of roads, canals and railways, of markets and churches on the long, slow, evolution of modern Buckinghamshire are examined in detail with the help of a wealth of illustrations, many specially taken or drawn for this book. BOOK - Welsh Family History, A Guide to Research
    by J.Rowlands, et al. (Eds)
This book is not a step by step guide for complete beginners. Instead it is aimed at those with some knowledge of research generally who are either experienceing difficulties with their Welsh lines or who are, perhaps, coming to Welsh research for the first time. The editorial group had two main aims in mind when steering this book to publication. First, to give readers an insight into the social, cultural, religious and linguistic background of Wales and the ways in which this can effect hamily history research. Secondly, it wanted to dispel the widely held belief that these aspects pose insurmountable barriers to researching Welsh ancestors. 316 pgs/pub1994/softcover. More information

New Index by Brenda Young [2009]
Originally published by Tribune-Telegraph Press, Welland, 1923.
This facsimile reprint by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2009

Much has been written concerning the services and sacrifices of the people of Upper Canada (Ontario) during the War of 1812-1814. The author presents an intimate view by relating the experiences of individual participants in one of the most tragic acts of the drama of those years - The Battle of Chippawa. The author explains in the Preface that he relied on oral tradition that was handed down through the families since 1814, but that "the old traditions have been carefully justified by official and other contenporary records and in all particulars wherein such collaboration was possible. Any distorion of historical facts has been carefully avoided". The old families mentioned were from the Townships of Stamford, Thorold, and Pelham.

BOOK - Sketches Illustrating The Early Settlement and History of Glengarry in Canada
    By J. A. MacDonell.
    J. A. MacDonell recognized that much had been written on the subject of United Empire Loyalist settlement in Ontario, the War of 1812-14, and the Rebellion of 1837-8, but expressed concern that there was little mention made of the part that the Highlanders of Glengarry played in those conflicts. He corrects that oversight within the 29 chapters that comprise this formitable text. This book is an fine source of information for those interested in early settlement of the Highlanders in Glengarry and surrounding counties, and the role that they played in the American Revolution, United Empire Loyalist migration and settlement, War of 1812, and the Rebellion of 1837-38.

    By James E. Elliott .
The first detailed account of the little-known battle that changed the course of the War of 1812. Journalist and author James Elliott has compellingly reconstructed one of the least understood actions of the War of 1812. From the rise to brigadier of blacksmith John Chandler, to the Highland heroics of Alexander Fraser, Strange Fatality explores the dynamics of a night battle that stemmed the tide of invasion, cost two generals their freedom and unseated the highest-ranking soldier in the American army. In this ground-breaking study of a battle in which both sides were essentially blind, James Elliott sheds light, not only on a violent donnybrook in the dark, but also on the bizarre train of events that occasioned it. With 10 original maps, over 100 illustrations, portraits and photographs, many never seen before, as well as appendices on battlefield archaeology and the little-known “monument war.”

BOOK - Tecumseh's Bones, A historical mystery about the deception behind the death, burial, and legacy of the great Shawnee chief, Tecumseh. By Guy St-Denis.
Chief Tecumseh's death at the Battle of the Thames marked a turning point in the Anglo-American War of 1812. It was also the beginning of a mystery: the mutilation of Native corpses thwarted American attempts to identify Tecumseh's remains, giving rise to the belief that his body had been secretly recovered by his warriors. BOOK - A Wampum Denied: Procter's War of 1812. By Sandy Antal. Existing acccounts depict the Anglo-Native alliance in War of 1812 as one of convenience against a common enemy. The author's goal in this military study was to reveal the alliance as driven by something more tangible - a politically agreed objective to establish a Native homeland south of the Great lakes. This promise by military leaders was endorsed by the British government. Based largely on primary sources this book examines the strategies and personalities as well as the naval and land engagements. Also revealed are the massacres, propoganda and legacy of the conflict. .
