Under a Northern Star, the diverse historical experience of African Canadians Posted 11 March 2008 By: Sylvie Temblay, Library and Archives Canada Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is pleased to announce the launch of Under a Northern Star, a project funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Canadian Culture Online Program. This virtual exhibition presents seven unique collections held at Library and Archives Canada that document the diverse historical experience of African Canadians. The collections include historical papers that contextualize the life and work of persons who fought against slavery and racism, built settlements, and flourished as early Canadians. An overview by Dr. Afua Cooper provides insight into the importance of identifying, digitizing and researching these seven collections. A short history for each collection was written by individuals who are intimately connected to the people about whom they write and their stories. You are invited to visit the website. The contributions of many Library and Archives Canada staff were instrumental in the success of this project, and their efforts are much appreciated.
