Irish Genealogical Societies and Periodicals
By: Kyle Betit

Many societies and interest groups specifically devoted to Irish genealogy have been formed in both Ireland and especially in countries where the Irish diaspora settled. The benefits of joining such societies include receiving their periodicals, using their libraries, attending their meetings and seminars, exchanging information about particular ancestors, surnames, and places of interest with other members, and keeping current on developments in the world of Irish genealogy. A number of the Irish genealogy societies publish journals with information about how to do research, extracts from sources, surname exchange lists, queries, case studies, and a variety of other information. Some of the societies have annual seminars and/or monthly meetings at which experts on various topics speak. Many of the societies now have an Internet presence, and you can easily access information about their events and activities on-line. In the future you may find current information about Irish genealogy societies and publications on the new, highly informative web site "What's What in Irish Genealogy" developed by Irish genealogist Paul Gorry: http://indigo.ie/~gorry.

You may be interested in attending the world's largest Irish genealogy conference in September 2001 at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. The Fourth Irish Genealogical Congress ("A Genealogical Odyssey") will be sponsored by many of the Irish genealogy groups listed below. Further information about the congress may be found on the Congress' web site: http://indigo.ie/~irishgc/

One of the largest Irish genealogy societies anywhere is the Irish Genealogical Society International in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA with some 2,000 members. Although based in Minnesota, its interests include all of Ireland and the places where the Irish went. The IGSI library in Saint Paul includes many rare books, periodicals, manuscripts, and compilations donated to the society by members and other people. The IGSI quarterly, The Septs, includes listings of new acquisitions to its extensive holdings.

Because Irish immigrants went everywhere and became part of the communities in which they settled, you may also benefit from joining local societies wherever your Irish immigrants settled, such as the Quebec Family History Society or the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) http://www.nehgs.org), since they too will have information and resources useful for tracing your Irish immigrant ancestors. About every other year, NEHGS sponsors an Irish Genealogy Conference, the last one being held in September 1999.

There are also some societies which focus on the British Isles as a whole, such as the British Isles Family History Society in Los Angeles, California and the International Society for British Genealogy and Family History. These societies include England, Scotland and Wales as well as Ireland in their interests and publications.

The following is a list of many of the existing Irish genealogical societies with some details of their publications and conferences/seminars. I would be happy to learn from readers of this column about any other Irish genealogy groups I have not mentioned following.

The Irish At Home and Abroad: A Journal of Irish Genealogy and Heritage, published by The Irish At Home and Abroad, PO Box 521806, Salt Lake City, UT 84152, USA. Available from GlobalGenealogy.com at http://globalgenealogy.com/040mag.htm

One of Ireland's heritage centers, Galway Family History Society West (Unit 3, Venture Centre, Liosbaun Estate, Tuam Road, Galway, Ireland) publishes its own periodical of very high quality: Galway Roots-Clanna na Gaillimhe. Some Irish genealogy periodicals have been published in previous years but have since been discontinued, including The Irish Ancestor published between 1969-1986 (18 vols.), edited by Rosemary ffolliott of Fethard, Co. Tipperary, Ireland, and Gaelic Gleanings published betwwen 1982-1990 (10 vols.), edited by Peggy Magee of Arizona, USA. The material in these periodicals is inventoried in the Periodical Source Index (PERSI) described below.

Accessing Periodicals

Large collections of Irish genealogical periodicals are held at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, USA; the library of the Irish Genealogical Society International in St. Paul, USA; the Allen County Public Library in Ft. Wayne, USA; and the National Library of Ireland in Dublin.

The Periodical Source Index (PERSI) was created by the Allen County Public Library in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, USA. This library has an extensive international periodical collection including most of the Irish genealogical journals. Each year it publishes an inventory of articles in periodicals and journals it collects. PERSI has sections for places, research methodology, and family names. A CD-ROM Index to PERSI is available and may be searched by key word.
