Canadian Birth, Marriage and Death Records
Article updated: 24 Febuary 2008
By: Fawne Stratford-Devai   Biography & Archived Articles

QUEBEC

In the Province of Quebec, the responsibility for registration of vital events fell to the church. These civil registers have been in existence since the early seventeenth century. In 1926 the registration of births and deaths was allowed centrally for those who did not belong to a church. However, until 1969, all marriages were expected to take place in a church. Essentially, church records were accepted as the legal record for civil registration. Two copies of all registers were required to be kept, one in the parish, the other in the office of the district protonotary. After 100 years the records are transferred to the appropriate Regional Branch of the Archives Nationale du Québec.

Note: In order to locate a record of birth, marriage or death in Québec, researchers are usually required to know the religion of the person, the date of the event and the community where the person lived.

MODERN RECORDS
In simple terms the official government registration and collection of vital events centrally did not begin in Quebec until 1994. This radical modern reform has resulted in the need for the government to communicate clearly with people. For this reason they created leaflets in both English and French to explain the change and what is involved. These leaflets, along with most records since 1900 are available from:

HISTORIC RECORDS
Records more than 100 years old are in the custody of the regional offices of the Archives nationales du Québec (ANQ). The ANQ requires exact dates before certificates can be issued. Unfortunately, the ANQ cannot conduct extensive research. If you do not have the necessary details or information to order registrations, you might wish to hire a researcher to search for and obtain copies of the appropriate records on your behalf. The Quebec Family History Society (P.O. Box 1026, POINTE-CLAIRE, Quebec, H9S 1N9) can help by providing a list of researchers.

PRDH: Programme de recherche en démographie historique Recently a huge database has been made available online for those researching people in Quebec before 1800. Programme de recherche en démographie historique (PRDH) is a program that began in 1966 at the Université de Montréal to begin an exhaustive reconstruction of the population of Quebec from the beginnings of French colonization in the seventeenth century. The PRDH database is mainly based on the approximately 690,000 baptismal, marriage, and burial certificates dated prior to 1800 that come from 153 parishes, missions, and institutions. This massive project has come to fruition in the form of a computerized population register, composed of biographical files on all individuals of European ancestry who lived in the St. Lawrence Valley. The file for each individual gives the date and place of birth, marriage(s), and death, as well as family and conjugal ties with other individuals. This basic information is complemented by various socio-demographic characteristics drawn from documents: socio-professional status and occupation, ability to sign his or her name, place of residence, and, for immigrants, place of origin. The PRDH site includes Acadians who settled in Quebec, but it does not cover Acadia itself.

How to access the PRDH: http://www.genealogie.umontreal.ca/fr/main.htm or in english at: http://www.genealogie.umontreal.ca/en/main.htm Researchers can navigate the site free of charge and also conduct a first-level search. The information that you can obtain at the first level will be limited, but it will allow you to check whether the data base contains information on the ancestor(s) for whom you want to launch a search. For further information it will be necessary to take out a subscription which will enable you to obtain complete information and to navigate between the different components of the data base.

BOOKS - History of Brome County From the Dates of the Grants of Land therein to the Present Time, With Records of some Early Families [Quebec]

Volume One - Originally published by John Lovell and Son, Montreal 1908
Volume Two - Originally published by John Lovell and Son, Montreal 1937
These facsimile reprints by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2009

The Reverend Ernest M. Taylor created two volumes of history of Brome County and family sketches of the people who called Brome their home. The first volume was published in 1908. The author had intended to have the second volume ready soon after, "however, various matters occassioned the delay", not the least being the challenge of accumulating the histories of failies who settled in teh county pior to 1850. That second volume was published 29 years later in 1937. These works have been valued by historians and genealogists ever since. Both volumes include carefully prepared text that offers valuable insights into the early settlement and development of the County of Brome.     More information

BOOK - Pioneers of The Upper Ottawa, and The Humors of the Valley [Hull & Aylmer, Quebec area]
By Anson Guard.
Originally published by Emerson Press, Ottawa, 1905.
This facsimile reprint by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 1999 (CD 2009)

Genealogists will rejoice to see this new edition of Pioneers of the Upper Ottawa, with its wealth of genealogical information about families in the Aylmer-Eardley-South Hull area. The original edition of 1906, published by a small press in Ottawa, has disappeared so thoroughly that even libraries have not found copies to place in their rare book rooms. The core of the book, and the justification for republishing it after so many years of neglect, are the genealogies which occupy the last third of the volume. All the earliest families are listed, with information about who married whom, where migrant children have gone and whose farms various descendants occupy now. This historical reprint includes a new introduction and a new index.

American Revolution / United Empire Loyalists:
In response to protests in Boston over the British Parliament's attempts to maintain authority over its North American colonies, the British mobilized its army to put down the rebellion. Consequently the rebels formed militias of like-minded individuals to face the British military and to 'discourage' those colonial citizens who wished to remain loyal to the crown. Fighting broke out in 1775, offically ending in 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Surviving Loyalists needed to find refuge outside of the United States. The movement of United Empire Loyalists to Canada was a critical event in the settlement of what later became Canada. Loyalists settled throughout the present-day Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Ontario. Their descendants migrated throughout Canada and beyond.

BOOK - Sketches Illustrating The Early Settlement and History of Glengarry in Canada
