NUNAVUT TERRITORY

The establishment of Nunavut represents a landmark event in the history of Inuit and Canada. On April 1, 1999, Nunavut became Canada's newest territory, encompassing the central and eastern Arctic regions -- nearly one-fifth of Canada's land mass. For additional information about the newest territory, visit the Information Gateway to Nunavut at: www.nunavut.com/home.html or the Nunavut Government website at: http://www.gov.nu.ca/gnmain.htm

Vital Statistics
Bag #3, Health and Social Services
Rankin Inlet, Nunavut X0C 0G0
Telephone: (867) 645-5002
Fax: (867) 645-2997

Prior to April 1, 1999, Nunavut was part of the North West Territories. Births, marriages, deaths, still births and adoptions that occurred in the present Nunavut region would have been registered in the North West Territories.

Important Note: Many vital events occurred outside the Nunavut region of the Northwest Territories. This problem is most common for deaths and births. It was and often still is necessary for people in Nunavut to travel to other provinces and territories for medical treatment. Where people travelled for medical services depended on where they lived. The Nunavut Genweb site provides an outline of where people were sent:
  • Residents of the Qikiqtaaluk (Baffin) region, were most often sent to Montreal or Ottawa for treatment. In the 1950s and 60s, residents suffering from tuberculosis were sent to a sanitorium in Hamilton, Ontario for treatment.

  • Residents of the Kivalliq (Keewatin) region, were most often sent to Winnipeg, while those in the Kitikmeot were sent to Edmonton.

Many Nunavut services and information resources remain linked to the North West Territories. For this reason, researchers are encouraged to check the online resources for the North West Territories such as Northwest Territories Public Library Services: http://www.nwtpls.gov.nt.ca/

Hudson's Bay Company Archives: http://www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/hbca/index.html Founded in 1670, the Hudson's Bay Company's (HBC) chief interests for its first two centuries were the fur trade, exploration and settlement. After 1870, when its territory of Rupert's Land was incorporated into the Dominion of Canada, its interests became more varied. The area once known as Rupert's Land encompassed most of Northern Ontario and Northern Québec, all of Manitoba, most of Saskatchewan, the southern half of Alberta and a large part of the Northwest Territories.
