By: Fawne Stratford-Devai   Biography & Archived Articles

NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR

Although Newfoundland did not join Canada until March 31, 1949, government records of births, marriages and deaths (civil registration records) date from 1892.

MODERN RECORDS
Government records of births, marriages and deaths are held by the Department of Government Services and Land. To understand the requirements for ordering vital records researchers can download the application forms online or appear in person at the various Newfoundland Government Service Centres.

If you are applying in person for certificates, the main Government Service Centre in St. John's requires approximately a 20 minute waiting period. If applying at Service Centres in other areas of Newfoundland it will take about 3 days before an application for a certificate is processed for those who meet the eligibility requirements. For those researching from a distance, a certificate can be applied for by sending a signed letter or completely the online application form and mailing it to the Department of Government Services at the address below.

HISTORIC RECORDS
For records prior to 1892, the most commonly used source is church records which are available from about 1860 (a few returns date as early as the 1820s). Inquiries concerning records prior to 1892 should be directed to the Provincial Archives.

The Provincial Archives holds two important collections of vital records:
  • The Registers of Vital Statistics: consisting mainly of transcripts of the baptism and marriage records of various churches throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and are contained in some 124 bound ledgers on 14 reels of microfilm.
  • Parish Records Collection: which contains photocopies and/or microfilm copies of original church registers of baptisms, marriages and burials, as well as records of confirmations, minute books and other records of parish life. The collection contains the records of approximately 200 parishes within Newfoundland and Labrador.
In 1998, the Government's Vital Statistics Division transferred a number of its original registers to the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador (PANL). The decision was made to release births that were at least 100 years old, marriages that were over 75 years old and deaths that were over 50 years old. As of July 2001, the following years have been transferred to the Archives:
  • Births - 1891-1899
  • Marriages - 1891-1922
  • Deaths - 1891-1949
Due to the large size and fragile state of the registers, an agreement was reached with the Genealogical Society of Utah (part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - LDS) to have them microfilmed. The Vital Statistics Division uses the LDS microfilm to issue certificates. The microfilm is available for research purposes in the Reference Room at Provincial Archives and is also available through local LDS Family History Centers.

Important Note: The Provincial Archives is not able to make prints of the records for customers and cannot issue certificates based on the records. Certificates can only be obtained from the Vital Statistics Division, Department of Government Services and Land whose contact information is noted above.
