Boundaries of 'old' Brock District & Oxford County (Ontario)
A reader inquires about the relationship betweent he boundaries of Oxford County and the 'old' Brock District:
Rick,
You might be someone who could confirm that the Brock District in Ontario was superceded by Oxford County after 1849. Do you have maps that support that? Appreciate any assistance on this question. Thanks
David Perkins
Hi David
The maps that can help with understanding the relationship between Districts and Counties are included in the District Marriage Registers of Upper Canada books that we publish. We do not have an independent map available on paper.
The book that covers Brock District is Vol 2 of The District Marriage Registers of Upper Canada. A description is at: http://globalgenealogy.com/books/258002.htm . The complete set of books includes 27 volumes however they can be purchased individually.
The link for the entire list of District Marriage registers is at: http://globalgenealogy.com/dismar1.htm
Brock District included following townships and places in 1842:
- Beachville (village)
- Blandford
- Blenheim
- Burford
- Burford (town)
- Canning (village)
- Dereham
- Embro (village)
- Huntingford (village)
- Ingersol (town)
- Nissouri
- Norwich
- Norwichville (village)
- Otterville (Quaker Settlement)
- Oakland
- Oakland (village)
- Oxford, north
- Oxford, East
- Oxford, west
- Tilsonburgh (village)
- Woodstock (district town/seat)
- Zorra east and west.
An excellent explanation of the District system in early Upper Canada is at: http://globalgenealogy.com/globalgazette/List001/list62.htm
A map of Districts in 1836 is at: http://globalgenealogy.com/images/dis1836.gif
A map of the Districts in 1845 is at: http://globalgenealogy.com/images/dis1845.gif
We do have a very detailed map of Oxford County, that illustrates the county borders and even the lots and concessions within the county. It can be ordered anline at http://globalgenealogy.com/maps/012main.htm or call us at 1-800-361-5168 to arrange delivery to you.
Hope this helps :)
