Irish Convicts & Free Settlers To Australia

I found an exciting (and free) resource on the internet last night.

The National Archives of Ireland has provided a database of people who were transported to Australia for a variety of crimes and infractions. There are also some 'free settlers' included. Those 'free settlers' were members of the families of those transported.

This valuable resource covers a wide period of time: 1788 to 1868.

Searching the database is easy. Many readers will search the database using names however I also recommend searching it by word or phrase. On my first few searches, I looked for surnames and got the sort of results that you would expect.

Then I searched an uncommon surname 'DEATH' (from Wexford County Ireland). The database did not include anyone of that surname, however I did get several responses to the search, based on the word death being somewhere in the record of one of the convicts... usually 'death sentence'.

I also did some searches by place-name and found some interesting information.

The fields that are included in this database are:
  • SURNAME:
  • OTHER NAMES:
  • ALIAS:
  • AGE:
  • SEX:
  • PLACE OF TRIAL:
  • TRIAL DATE:
  • PLACE OF IMPRISONMENT:
  • DOCUMENT DATE:
  • CRIME DESCRIPTION:
  • SENTENCE:
  • SHIP:
  • PETITIONER:
  • DOCUMENT REFERENCES:
  • MICROFILM REFERENCES:
  • COMMENTS:
Not every data field is filled in for every person.
