Global Genealogy To Focus Resources on Its Online Business
Published: 29 October 2008
By: Rick Roberts,   Biography & Archived Articles

During the 16 years that Global Genealogy has published and distributed books and supplies for family historians, methods of communication and distribution have evolved greatly. That evolution continues...

We began in 1992 as a mail-order business, distributing paper catalogues and accepting orders by mail and fax. In the mid-nineties we made two major changes. Global Genealogy opened its first physical store, and we launched an internet store. As people became more familiar with the internet, much of our physical catalogue business diminished while the online business grew very quickly, far out pacing anything that we had been able to accomplish by mail.

Global Genealogy continues to enjoy strong sales growth from our web-based store. However, we have never been able to successfully attract enough customers to our physical stores to cover retail operating expenses -- regardless of how much is spent on advertising.

Our analysis shows that part of the reason for diminishing retail sales is the fact that there has been strong growth in online orders from customers who live within a thirty minute radius of our physical store. Many of these are the same people who used to come to the store. That is understandable when you consider that they can make an order from the comfort of their home during the evening of one day and have their purchase delivered to them, often the following day. They are able to shop when it is convenient to them, and don't have to burn any gas to do it.

That said, we have decided to close our retail store in Campbellville at the end of the day on November 15, 2008. Our online and mail order business will continue to grow to serve you better.

Online and mail-order distribution will be done from a warehouse in Milton, Ontario. There is no public showroom nor store at that location. It is purely a pick, pack and ship facility.

Those who purchase online, by mail or by phone will not notice any change. Our telephone number continues to be the same (1-800-361-5168) as is the address of our website ( globalgenealogy.com ).

We see this as a positive change, though we will truly miss seeing those who have been regular visitors to our physical store. The change provides us with the opportunity to invest in expanding the products and information that are available at the Global Genealogy and Global Gazette websites. Global Genealogy will publish more new books and CDs in 2009 than in previous years. More genealogy workshops and lectures, are planned, both locally and at a distance. And we will be able to get out to exhibit at more genealogy and history conferences than we have been able to in the past.

In closing, if you ever thought that you would like to spend some time browsing all of the books at Global Genealogy's Campbellville bookstore, the physical store will be open Tuesday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm from today until November 15. Map and directions

We look forward to serving you for many years to come.
