Family Tree Maker 2008 users to receive free FTM 2009 Column published: 19 August 2008 By: Rick Roberts, Biography & Archived Articles Some Global Gazette readers have informed us that they have received email notifications from Family Tree Maker telling them that they, as registered Family Tree Maker 2008 users, will recieve a free download of Family Tree Maker 2009 when it becomes available later this month. A good bit of news! Though we were not able to get an unconditional confirmation from Ancestry, they did confirm that 60,000 emails had been sent so far. The representative I spoke to said that others would receive similar email notifications, but he was unable to confirm that everyone would get a free update. He was also unable to tell us what the criteria is. We suspect that these emails are coming out in timed waves and that they will go to all registered users, though we have no official confirmation of that. I have not received my email yet but suspect that it will be along in the next few days. Whenever something is being released in an alphabetical sequence, my surname's first letter ensures that I'm near the end of the line. That said, the purpose of this article is to encourage those who own a legal copy of Family Tree Maker to take the time to register it. To register your already installed FTM 2008, open Family Tree Maker, click on HELP, then click on REGISTER FAMILY TREE MAKER, then follow the on-screen prompts. As a registered user of FTM 2008, it not prudent to pre-order a FTM 2009 until you are sure of the status of your free update. If you are using a Family Tree Maker older than FTM 2008 (version 17), then you may definitely be interested in pre-ordering FTM 2009.
