British 19th Century Newspapers Now Online
Published: 14 March 2008. Updated: 27 & 31 March 2008
By: Rick Roberts,   Biography & Archived Articles

All of our readers with ancestors from Great Britain will be very interested to know that the British Library has digitized newspapers from the 19th century and has them available online, at no cost, for a short period of time.

NOTE: The link to the temporary free access to this database appears to have been discontinued. Should we become aware of a new link to the free trial we will post it here. [editor, 31 March 2008]

Search the 19th Century British newspapers

The Advanced Search empowers you to narrow the search. You can choose People (birth/marr/death) or News or Notices or a combination, or you can choose All. If your browser is set to block cookies, you wll need to authorize your browser to accept cookies form the British Library site so that you can use all of the features.

Several users have reported that they have found obituaries for relatives who died in a variety places arround the world. It makes sense, insofar as newspaper readers in a town or village in England would be interested in knowing that cousin "George" who moved to Canada or America, had passed away.

This resource is well worth looking at while it remains open to public viewing!
