Ontario Research Conference - Toronto
Posted: 1 March 2008

  Biography & Archived Articles

Last week we exhibited at yet another successful genealogy mini-conference, organized by the Toronto Branch of The Ontario Genealogical Society. The event, Keys to Ontario Research, was co-sponsored by the Canadiana Department of the North York Public Library. Those of you who know of the library are aware that a visit to the facility provides a wonderful opportunity to use their considerable genealogy resources that are housed on the sixth floor. Additionally the Ontario Genealogical Society has their Toronto-based collection hosted at the same site. A research bonanza for those with Ontario roots!

These events are a real bargain! Great topics, delivered by leading speakers, in a terrific facility at a low price -- you can't ask for much more. There is even a table full of complimentary home-made baked treats available during the breaks. Registration costs for the February 23rd workshop started at a low of 30.00 for early registration (members) to 35.00 for those registering at the last minute (members). Non-members' registration was only 5.00 more. If you live close enough to Toronto to participate, plan on attending one of the upcoming workshops. Check the OGS official web site for details about the Toronto OGS events or the Global Genealogy Upcoming Events listing for family history eduction closer to home.

The speakers & topics (alphabetically by surname):
  • Christine Bourolias - Research at the Archives of Ontario: Start with the Web Site
  • Ruth Burkholder - Do Local History and Family History Mix?
  • Fraser Dunford - The Municipal Goldmine - Municipal Records in Ontario
  • Diana Fink - Glimpses into Ontario's Past: The Canadiana Department's Local History Collection
  • J. Brian Gilchrist - How to Read and Understand a Document
  • Kathryn Lake Hogan - Walking in Your Ancestors' Footsteps - Using Maps and Gazetteers in Your Research
  • Paul McGrath - Ontario from Districts to Counties: A look at the Records
Some pictures: (sorry I didn't get pictures of all of the presenters)

Toronto OGS, like other family history societies across the country,
has a core group of dedicated volunteers. Here, registration desk
volunteers cheerfully prepare for the 140-150 expected attendees.

Presenter Paul McGrath browsing the book tables just before
rushing off to catch a flight to London, England to do research for
another episode of Ancestors in the Attic.

Toronto Branch Publications volunteers greeted visitors with
a friendly smile, and lots of records in published form, to help those
who are researching their Toronto ancestors.
