Digitization of Irish 1901 and 1911 census records
Posted: 04 December 2007

  Biography & Archived Articles

Those who seek evidence of the location and family statistics of their Irish ancestors have much to celebrate today. The Archives of Ireland, in partnership with others including Library and Archives Canada, are digitizing Irish census and making them available online. The first of those digitized images are available to day -- Dublin 1911.

The household returns and ancillary records for the censuses of Ireland of 1901 and 1911, which are in the custody of the National Archives of Ireland, represent an extremely valuable part of the Irish national heritage, and a resource for genealogists, local historians and other scholars.

Over the coming months, 1901 and 1911 census for all of the counties of Ireland will be made available to online researchers. 1911 census is being digitized first. The records will be posted online in the following order:
  1. Dublin (available 04 Dec. 2007)
  2. Kerry
  3. Antrim & Down
  4. Donegal
  5. Cork
  6. Wexford
  7. Galway
  8. King’s County (now known as Offaly)
  9. Limerick
  10. Mayo
  11. Waterford
  12. Armagh
  13. Carlow
  14. Cavan
  15. Clare
  16. Fermanagh
  17. Kildare
  18. Kilkenny
  19. Leitrim
  20. Londonderry (also known as Derry)
  21. Longford
  22. Louth
  23. Meath
  24. Monaghan
  25. Queen’s County (now known as Laois)
  26. Roscommon
  27. Sligo
  28. Tipperary
  29. Tyrone
  30. Westmeath
  31. Wicklow
Library and Archives Canada is doing the digitizing of the original 1901 and 1911 Irish census records. They will also create two searchable indexes which will be linked to the digital images. The two indexes include a nominal index to every individual person listed in both censuses; and a topographical index based on townland/street within District Electoral Division.

The site works beautifully. Easy to use, full featured... and believe it or not.... free! The images of original census pages are provided in the universal .pdf format -- they can be printed an/or downloaded. The search tool is very fast and provides a list of those in the household with links to bring up the relevant census page/s for that household.

This writer is delighted to see the quality of the work that has been done by Library and Archives Canada to produce high-quality images and indexes of the Irish census. We hope that in future months, Library and Archives Canada will apply similar professional indexing standards to their own online Canadian census records.
