About Colorado's Historic Newspaper Collection (CHNC)
By: Rick Roberts,   Biography & Archived Articles

Colorado's Historic Newspaper Collection (CHNC) currently includes 86 newspapers published in Colorado from 1859 to 1928. Newspapers come from 46 cities and 34 counties throughout the state, which were published in English, German, Spanish, or Swedish. CHNC contains over 291,000 digitized pages from these newspapers. New material is added once a month.

The long-term goal for CHNC is to provide access to all newspapers published in Colorado between 1859 and 1923, the time period for which publications are in the public domain and without copyright restrictions. Over 2 million pages from over 200 newspapers from this time period are available for digitization.

The relevance for Canadians is quite staggering. Many Canadians emigrated to the USA, thousands settling in Colorado. Still others ventured through Colorado on their way to settle in other points west.

The site also includes a section called "Genealogy Help" where you can learn that 19th century newspapers contain a variety of personal information. Society news articles may include lists of individuals who attended balls or other events. Lists of "Hotel Arrivals" frequently appear and many Colorado newspapers included announcements about the arrival of emigrant wagon trains. Papers also frequently published legal announcements such as court trails and mining claims.
