BOOK - Smith's Canadian Gazetteer of Canada West, 1846 (Ontario) by WM. H. Smith. In compiling this, the first Gazetteer of Canada West, WM. H. Smith was induced to undertake the task by the great ignorance which he found to exist respecting the Province, not only amongst persons in Great Britain, or newly-arrived emigrants, but even amongst many of those who had been for years resident in the country; and from ascertaining that the various, contradictory, and occasionally false accounts given to emigrants on their arrival, respecting distant localities, frequently led them to alter their original intentions respecting their destination; and often induced them to leave the province altogether, and settle in the United States.

This facsimile reprint by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2009 Much has been written concerning the services and sacrifices of the people of Upper Canada (Ontario) during the War of 1812-1814. The author presents an intimate view by relating the experiences of individual participants in one of the most tragic acts of the drama of those years - The Battle of Chippawa. The author explains in the Preface that he relied on oral tradition that was handed down through the families since 1814, but that "the old traditions have been carefully justified by official and other contenporary records and in all particulars wherein such collaboration was possible. Any distorion of historical facts has been carefully avoided". The old families mentioned were from the Townships of Stamford, Thorold, and Pelham. ISBN 978-1-926797-0-3 (Hardcover). More information

BOOK - Prince Edward District Marriage Register 1831-1849
. By Dan Walker & Fawne Stratford-Devai. On the 16th of March 1831 Prince Edward County was separated from the Midland District and became recognized as a separate district as soon as jail and court house facilities were built. Picton became the District Town. However, it was not until the 6th of February 1834 that a court house and jail were established and the Prince Edward District formerly proclaimed. Effective that same year, marriage returns for Prince Edward County were required to be returned to the Clerk of the Peace in the District town of Picton. Returns were sent in to the Clerk of the Peace from ministers who performed marriages, with the exception of Anglican and Roman Catholic ministers. An example of some of the towns and townships where marriages occurred and were reported in the Prince Edward District Register include: Adolphstown, Ameliasburgh, Athol, Belleville, Bloomfield, Consecon, Cramahe, Darlington, Demorestville, Ernest Town, Fredericksburgh, Hallowell, Hillier, Kingston, Marysburgh, Millford, Murray (Newcastle District), Osgood (Dalhousie District), Percy, Picton, Saltfleet (Gore District), Sidney (Victoria District), Sophiasburgh, Thurlow, Tyendenagua, Wellington, Whitby, and a number of other areas.

BOOK - Sketches Illustrating The Early Settlement and History of Glengarry in CanadaBy J. A. MacDonell. J. A. He corrects that oversight within the 29 chapters that comprise this formitable text. This book is an fine source of information for those interested in early settlement of the Highlanders in Glengarry and surrounding counties, and the role that they played in the American Revolution, United Empire Loyalist migration and settlement, War of 1812, and the Rebellion of 1837-38.
