BOOKS on CD - Scotttish Immigrants to North America, 1600s-1800s - The Collected Works of David Dobson - Volumes 1 & 2
By David Dobson
Published by Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, various dates

This collection provides 36 of David Dobson's Scottish research books in two volumes.

Not just a genealogist but also something of a fisherman, author David Dobson has been trawling for the names of Scottish immigrants to North America for over twenty years. From original records and printed sources in Great Britain, Canada, and the United States -- in numerous full-length books and articles -- he has amassed information on Scottish immigrants to North America, the majority of whom arrived in America from the earliest colonial times up to the Revolutionary War. These CDs, which captures the page images of his publications, the fruit of Mr. Dobson's research is available in a nano-second, and at a fraction of the cost of the original books.

In these CDs, with thier lightning-quick electronic index (Vol 1) and searchablility (Vol 1 & 2), the researcher has access to materials that otherwise would have been difficult, time-consuming, and expensive to find and use. Dobson's prodigious output is now available to anyone who has access to a computer (PC or Mac - vol 2)(PC - vol 1) with a CD drive!

Volume One - 10 Books on 1 CD (Searchable with free Family Archive CD Viewer)

    Volume One
    10 Books on 1 CD

From his early work identifying Scots soldiers and civilians taken prisoner during the 1715 and 1745 uprisings and subsequently transported to the colonies, which appeared in the Directory of Scots Banished to the American Plantations, 1650-1775, to the fascinating seven-volume series entitled Directory of Scottish Settlers in North America, 1625-1825, to the definitive Original Scots Colonists of Early America, 1612-1783, Dobson's prodigious output is now available on CD.

Several hundred thousand Scots immigrated to North America during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries--but who were these people? Records identifying them -- even a fraction of them -- documenting their immigration to the New World, are notoriously hard to find. But thanks to David Dobson's arduous labors in record offices and archives throughout Great Britain and America, we have information pertaining to the identity of approximately 75,000 of these early Scots immigrants. Indeed, in his researches Mr. Dobson examined every known or potential source of information, including parish records, passenger lists, prison records, church records, court records, deeds, wills, marriage contracts, Treasury papers, State papers, newspapers, and journals--and as far as these sources would allow, he amassed a body of information that is absolutely definitive.

Variously providing such items as the immigrant's name, date and place of birth, occupation, cause of banishment, residence, names of parents and other family members, port of embarkation, destination, name of ship, place and date of arrival, place of settlement, names of spouse and children, and date and place of death, this CD incorporates ten of Mr. Dobson's publications, which are listed below:

    • The Original Scots Colonists of Early America, 1612-1783
    • The Original Scots Colonists . . . Supplement, 1607-1707
    • The Original Scots Colonists . . . Caribbean Supplement, 1611-1707
    • Directory of Scottish Settlers in North America, 1625-1825. 7 vols.
    • Scots on the Chesapeake, 1607-1830
    • Scots in the Carolinas, 1680-1830
    • Directory of Scots Banished to the American Plantations, 1650-1775

Volume Two - 26 Books on 1 CD (Searchable PDF format)

    Volume Two
    26 Books on 1 CD

For the volumes on this CD, Dobson combed through sources in archives in Scotland, England, Denmark, and North America, including newspapers such as the Aberdeen Journal, Fife Advertiser, and Glasgow Herald; the Calendar of British State Papers; Scottish Services of Heirs; the Edinburgh Registry of Deeds; Acts of the Privy Council; records of the High Court of the Admiralty; records from a number of Scottish shipping lines, and gravestones.

Persons familiar with the earlier CD collection of Dobson books will discover that he has expanded on subjects covered in that CD and plowed entirely new ground in this one. For example, Volume Two contains sequel volumes to Scots in the USA and Canada, Directory of Scots in the Carolinas, and Scots in the West Indies. Conversely, it also traces Scots to Georgia and the Deep South, the American West, and via Scandinavia to the New World.

Covering about 100,000 Scots not found in Volume One, this CD presents some or all of the following information on each immigrant: name, date and place of birth, occupation, cause of banishment, residence, names of parents or other family members, port of embarkation, destination, name of ship, place and date of arrival, place of settlement, names of spouse and children, and date and place of death.

Following is a complete list of the twenty-six books on this fully searchable CD:

image of actual cover to be added BOOK - British Home Children: Their Stories
Compiled by the British Isles Family History Society of Ottawa (BIFHSGO)
Published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2010
British Home Children were those who were admitted into a Philanthropic Home, Union Workhouse or Industrial School between 1869 and 1948, from families that had suffered a great tragedy or were dysfunctional. A great many of these children were then brought to Canada where they were received into a Distributing Home for settlement as farm labourers and domestics. To commemorate The Year of the British Home Child, BIFHSGO has assembled a collection of stories prepared by the researchers about the lives of some of these these children — their ancestors — that demonstrate the strength of character, sense of purpose and good humour that enabled them to overcome adversity and contribute a positive and lasting legacy to their new country.

BOOK - On The Crofters' Trail
By David Craig
Published by Birlinn Ltd, Edinburgh, 2010 (Edition)
In the Clearances of the 19th century, crofts - once the mainstay of Highland life in Scotland - were swept away as the land was put over to sheep grazing. Many of the people of the Highlands and islands of Scotland were forced from their homes by landowners in the Clearances. Some fled to Nova Scotia and beyond. David Craig sets out to discover how many of their stories survive in the memories of their descendants. He travels through 21 islands in Scotland and Canada, many thousands of miles of moor and glen, and presents the words of men and women of both countries as they recount the suffering of their forbears.
