Books, Maps & Other Resources Scotland / Scottish Genealogy & History BOOK - EIGG, The Story of An Island (New Edition) By Camille Dressler
Drawing on written accounts and oral history, legend and song, this is the story of Eigg and its inhabitants from the earliest times to the present day. Tracing the changing landscapes and lifestyles from the blood-thirsty days of clan battles, remembered through myths and songs, to the development of crofting, the clearances and the effect of various landlords on the island. The islanders paid a heavy price for supporting their chiefs in the two Jacobite rebellions. The chief of Clanranald escaped to France after finding refuge in another cave at the north end of the island at the end of the 1745 rising. The islanders who followed him were not so lucky, they were taken prisoners by the Navy and sent to London for trial: 19 died in prison, 18 were transported to Jamaica as slaves and only 2 came back. The island recovered some of its prosperity towards during the 19th century, when its sustained a population of 500, producing potatoes, oats, black cattle and kelp. The kelp industry based on the harvesting of sea-weed financed the building of the main farmhouses on the island, tenanted by old Clanranald families, until the chiefs' policy of raising rents caused many of them to emigrate to Canada. This book gives a comprehensive and colourful picture of how the islanders reacted and survived. "Eigg" is a testament to the importance of Highland heritage, capturing the imagination of a community in the struggle to recreate an island identity. The story includes a vivid account of the community buy-out of Eigg in June 1997. 251 Pages 7 X 9.5" Publisher: Birlinn Ltd 2Rev Ed edition (1 April 2007) ISBN-10: 1841584258 ISBN-13: 978-1841584256
