BOOK - Women in Scotland c.1100–c.1750
by Elizabeth Ewan (Editor), Maureen Meikle (Editor)
This collection of twenty essays celebrates the contribution of women to Scottish history, and is intended to challenge the belief that Mary Queen of Scots is the only Scottish woman worth discussing.
Women have been ignored in general histories of Scotland but these essays demonstrate that women have constantly affected events, either personally or from behind the scenes, such as Anna of Denmark, 15th-century princesses Margaret, Isabella and Eleanor, and Margaret Stewart, the wife of John Knox. Subjects include nuns and saints, women in art and literature, politically active women, aristocratic and powerful women, and wives and mothers.
A comprehensive view of the lives of women in Scotland from 1100 to 1750, based on a wide range of archival sources, including Court of Session records and Middle Scots poetry.
Amongst the women featured are nuns, brewers, widows, witches, and wives of ministers of the kirk.
