BOOK - CANNA, The Story of a Hebridean Island, Fourth Edition
By John Lorne Campbell. Introduction and Epilogue by Hugh Cheape

This is the definitive history of Canna, one of the most beautiful of all the Scottish islands. Fertile and with a sheltered harbour, Canna has played an important part in the story of the Hebrides. Small though CANNA is, many of the major historical trends of the Hebrides have touched it, from St. Columba through the Benedictine monasticism of Iona to the Lordship of the Isles. Following the Reformation the island was of considerable importance to the Irish Franciscan mission of the 1620s and also the Jacobite risings before being swept up in the tragedies of depopulation and clearance of the nineteenth century.

This study covers the history of the island from the time of St Columba, who preached there in the sixth century, to the second half of the twentieth century.

During the Middle Ages Canna was linked significantly with the monastery of lona, and was central to the political structure that was the Lordship of the Isles. Its population was visited by the Irish Franciscan missions of the 1620s, was active during the Jacobite risings and suffered catastrophically during the Clearances in the nineteenth century.

More recently Canna has become the hub of a revitalised interest in Scottish Gaelic and Hebridean history. Gifted to the National Trust in 1981, the island is currently undergoing something of a revival, with the creation of the St. Edward Centre on Sanday, and the proposed developments of Canna House. Recent archaeological surveys and historical research has uncovered much new evidence about the island. Hugh Cheape of the Royal Museum of Scotland, who has been intimately involved in the Canna project, has fully edited the book. New contributions update and fill out the account of the island.

Of special interest to genealogists is the inclusion of a 1764-1765 census that includes all members of each household and relationship to the head-of-household.
