BOOK - Benmore Church of Ireland Cemetery, Inishmacsaint Parish, County Fermanagh [Ireland] - Irish Genealogy Series
Edited by David R. Elliott
The cemetery of the Benmore Church of Ireland, Inishmacsaint Parish, is located northwest of Enniskillen. The original parish church was located at Church Hill and was built in 1688. By the late 1820s it was in great disrepair so the Marquis of Ely, its patron, had it torn down and he had a new church built at the present location several miles south east of Church Hill on Binmore Townland. The new building was consecrated in 1831 and has often been known as the Benmore [sic] Church, It was located near the then current Ely Lodge and the churchyard contained a large underground vault holding the remains of the Ely family.
This cemetery index covers the main parish church at Benmore.
Most of the graves in this cemetery belong to people of Inishmacsaint parish, but it also contains people from the surrounding parishes and even the town of Enniskillen.
One should not presume that only members of the Church of Ireland (Anglicans) were buried here. Because the Church of Ireland was the state church, people of all faiths could be buried in it, including Roman Catholics.
This cemetery index is in two parts. - The first part of the index consists of transcriptions of the memorial stones.
- The second part is an alphabetical index of every person named on the stones, whether they are buried there or not. Their dates, townland or place of death, and maiden names, if stated, are included. Each entry has the section, row, and stone number.
If readers find acestors listed in this book and then desire photographs of the stones and their context in the cemetery, those photos can be purchased directly from the author. Contact information is included in the book.
