BOOK - The Cemetery of St. Molaise, Monea, Devenish Parish, County Fermanagh (Revised Edition)
Edited by David R. Elliott

St. Molaise Cemetery is located north-west of Enniskillen on Highway B81 at Monea. The first church on the property was erected in the sixth century by St. Molaise. Various church buildings have existed on the site since then. The current Church of Ireland sanctuary was rebuilt in 1890; the tower is older. The oldest known graves in the cemetery date from the latter half of the 1600s. Although the map to the cemetery has been lost, many of the older memorial stones were inventoried

The author began photographing memorial stones in this cemetery in 2006. Many flat stones were buried under grass and moss. He uncovered more than fifty such stones plus several older stones that were missed in earlier tanscriptions. When the Reverend Steele did his transcriptions a century ago some of the stones were impossible to read even then. Using digital photography and Adobe Photo Shop the author has been able to enhance some of the pictures to decipher names and dates which cannot be read otherwise.

Most of the graves in this cemetery belong to people of Devenish parish, but it also contains people from the surrounding parishes of Rossorry, Boho, Cleenish, Inishmacsaint, and even the town of Enniskillen.

One should not presume that only members of the Church of Ireland (Anglican) were buried here. Because the Church of Ireland was the state church, people of all faiths could be buried in it, including Roman Catholics.

This cemetery index is in two parts.
  • The first part of the index consists of transcriptions of the memorial stones.
  • The second part is an alphabetical index of every person named on the stones, whether they are buried there or not. Their dates, townland or place of death, and maiden names, if stated, are included. Each entry has the section, row, and stone number.
Mr. Elliott reproduced the genealogical and historical information from the inscriptions, but has not included scripture passages, sayings, or poetry. That information usually can be obtained from photographs of the Stones. If readers desire photographs of the stones and their context in the cemetery, they can be purchased from Mr. Elliott (contact information is provided in the book).
