BOOK - County Down, A Topographical Dictionary of The Parishes, Villages and Towns of These Counties in the 1830s.
By Samuel Lewis; Preface by Brian M. Walker

This book presents an unusual combination of contemporary sources on life in County Down over one hundred and sixty years ago. The text is extracted from Samuel Lewis's monumental two volumed topographical dictionary of Ireland, first published in 1837. It has been combined with many maps and engravings of the period. The end result is a very special view of the parishes, villages and towns of County Down in the years before the great changes of the Victorian era. It provides a compelling record of agriculture, industry, population, buildings and antiquities in the county in the 1830s.

Professor Brian Walker is responsible for the preface and the selection of illustrations. His work on local studies includes the much acclaimed Sentry Hill; an Ulster farm andfamily, and he has played a pioneering role in the retrieval and use of early photographic sources. He holds the chair ofIrish Studies at Queen's University Belfast.

. Comments from contemporaries on the first publication of Lewis's dictionary.
  • 'It really and in truth is an excellent work, with fewer faults and more correctness than any work of its extent and variety of matter could be expected to contain'. Daniel O'Connell M.P., Dublin Evening Packet, 19 Apr 1838.

  • 'The extent and variety of the information are in the highest degree satisfactory. No page of it can be opened without the discovery of something of novelty and interest'. Newry Examiner, 16 May 1838.

  • 'The work, in our opinion, displays talent and research: and the individuals engaged in its composition are evidently men of taste, discrimination and learning'. Londonderry Sentinel, 12 May 1838.
Illustrated with contemporary maps and engravings c1830.
