Books, Maps & Other Resources Ireland & Northern Ireland Genealogy & History More Ireland, Northern Ireland & Irish Resources BOOK - Counties Londonderry & Donegal, A Topographical Dictionary of The Parishes, Villages and Towns of These Counties in the 1830s. By Samuel Lewis; Preface by Brian M. Walker
This book presents an unusual combination of contemporary sources on life in Counties Londonderry and Donegal over one hundred and sixty years ago.The text is extracted from Samuel Lewis's monumental two volumed topographical dictionary of Ireland, first published in 1837. It has been combined with many maps and engravings of the period. The end result is a very special view of the parishes, villages and towns of these counties in the years before the great changes of the Victorian era. It provides a compelling record of agriculture, industry, population, buildings and antiquities in the 1830s. Professor Brian Walker is responsible for the preface and the selection of illustrations. His work on local studies includes the much acclaimed Sentry Hill: an Ulster farm and family, and he has played a pioneering role in the retrieval and use of early photographic sources. He holds the chair of Irish Studies at Queen's University Belfast. Illustrated with contemporary maps and engravings c1830.
