LANCASHIRE was broken up by local government reform in 1974, but all true Lancastrians know that the ancient county palatine lives on, stretching from Langdale to the Mersey. So that, although 'real' Lancashire is no longer an administrative unit, throughout this book the author refers to the historic county as it existed for over eight hundred years. Few counties have such a varied landscape and even fewer can boast such a remarkable history. In the mid-1950's the late Joe Bagley wrote his History of Lancashire which for forty years was the most popular account of Lancashire's eventful story, running to several revised editions. However, in recent decades our knowledge of Lancashire's past has been transformed. Extensive documentary research has thrown new light on many familiar themes, while archaeology has revolutionized our understanding of Lancashire's origins and early development. The time was therefore right for a completely new book to replace Mr. Bagley's volume and this work has been undertaken by Dr. Alan Crosby, on of the best-known local historians in North-West England. 144 pp., Hard Cover, 7.5" x 10", 1998, ISBN 1-86044-070-3.
