CD ROMs - National Burial Index for England and Wales... SECOND EDITION
By: The Federation of Family History Societies.
The aim of the National Burial Index (NBI) for England and Wales is to assist family historians easily find burial records
The first edition of the NBI included about 5 million records from 4,300 parish, non-conformist and cemetery burial registers. A substantial number of member societies that had not submitted records for the First Edition later became actively involved by presenting data they already held, or embarked on this as a new project for their area. As a result, a further 7.8 million records were able to be added enabling the Second Edition to be released.
This Second Edition includes a set of 4 CDs containing more than 13.2 million records (including 5.4 million records from the First Edition) and covering over 8,000 burial registers, in more counties than the First Edition.
These entries come from different types of sources, for example, parish registers, bishops' transcripts, memorandum books, earlier transcripts or printed registers. The NBI for England and Wales does not contain monumental inscription records.
Burial records have been transcribed and computerised mainly by family history societies although a few individuals have contributed records. Co-ordinators dispatched their records to a central computer for further checking and syntactical validation - the aim being to present an index with uniform appearance.
The National Burial Index CDs include the following information (where available):
- Forename(s) and surname of the deceased
- Date of burial
- Age
- Parish or cemetery where the event was recorded
- The county of the parish or cemetery (pre-1974 list of counties)
- The society or group which transcribed the record
Note that the decision to exclude certain useful items of information from the NBI such as relationships, abode and occupation was a demand of certain family history societies and does not necessarily reflect the wish or intention of the Federation of Family History Societies.
