The main purpose of this Guide is to bring to the attention of family and local historians the existence of finding aids to classes of records not already covered by this series. An indexes to marriage licences, probate records, Quarter Sessions, etc, are often the major personal name indexes possessed by record offices, these are usually briefly listed, but, for full details of these, users are expected to consult the appropriate existing Guides. Indexes to the Census are now proliferating, and, although some are still mentioned here, the full range is only to be found in Marriage, Census and Other Indexes. Indexes to parish registers are normally omitted unless they cover a group of parishes and there do not appear to be copies elsewhere.
