BOOK - Grosse Ile - Gateway to Canada 1832-1937,
by Marianna O'Gallagher.
A quarantine station for European immigrants in the early life of Canada, Grosse Ile was the end of the road, not the beginning, for many seeking a new life in a new life in a new land. Many were held on the island for periods of time to prevent the spread of infectious disease. Many died in quarantine. As the Irish were the largest group of Immigrants at the time, this also is the story of the documented adoption of orphaned Irish children by the French Canadians during the period of 1847 and 1848.
