BOOK - Index to the 1881 Census Vaughan Township York County, Ontario,
Compiled by Ruth M. Burkholder.

Vaughan Township is on the west side of the County of York, bordered by York township on the south and King township on the north. To the west are Albion and Toronto Gore townships in the County of Peel and on the east, Vaughan is divided from Markham township by Yonge Street. In 1881 all the villages and communities within the township were enumerated as part of the township.

Vaughan township has 6,682 residents listed in this census , and there are 2,634 residents listed in this volume. Included are all heads of household plus any household members over the age of 13 who have had an occupation listed. Also included are all those whose surnames differs from that of the head of the household.

Enumerators varied in their writing and spelling skills. Every attempt has been made to decipher what is on the census film...names with a? are entered with the best transcription that could be discerned; cross references have been attempted to and from the more usual spellings. Also includes facsimile copy of 1881 County of York Gazeteer and Directory, including the alphabetical lists of the residents in the town of Newmarket, and the villages and postal localities of the county; post office addresses of the residents and farmers of East Gwillimbury, Etobicoke, Georgina, King, Markham, North Gwillimbury, Scarboro, Vaughan, Whitchurch and York.
