The list of York County Inhabitants in this publication was extracted from the Toronto portion of Rowsell's City of Toronto and County of York Directory for 1850-51, published by Henry Rowsell in 1850. Pages 143 and 144 of the original book have been inserted at the appropriate places in the text of this reprint. Rowsell's directory has also been recently microfilmed by the Canadian institute for Historical Microreproductions for publication in microfiche format. This book is intended to help fill the gap in Toronto publication records caused by the loss of Toronto Census records of 1848, 1850 and 1851-52. York County of 1850 covered a vast area, including localities that became part of Ontario, Peel and Simcoe Counties in later years. While a directory is not a perfect substitute for a missing census, it can be useful by confirming the existence of a person in York County at that time and providing a location, which in turn often will lead to other sources of information such as land and church records.
