BOOK - Inhabitants of Toronto, Ontario, 1850.
By: Norman K. Crowder.

The list of Toronto inhabitants in this publication was extracted from the Toronto portion of Rowsell's City of Toronto and County of York Directory for 1850-51, published by Henry Rowsell in 1850. Pages 143 and 144 of the original book have been inserted at the appropriate places in the text of this reprint. Rowsell's directory has also been recently microfilmed by the Canadian institute for Historical Microreproductions for publication in microfiche format. For furthur details, see the bibliography and locations at the end of the book.

This book is intended to help fill the gap in Toronto publication records caused by the loss of Toronto Census records of 1848, 1850 and 1851-52. A city directory does not provide as much detail as the missing census records, especially at the 1851-52 census, which was the first comprehensive return showing all family members with their ages, religion, marital status, etc. Nevertheless the directory can be useful by confirming the existence of a person in Toronto at that time and providing an address, which in turn often will lead to other sources of information such as land and church records.
