Following the move from a district to a county system of local government in mid 19th century Ontario, counties became responsible for recording all marriages within their boundaries. The clerk of Haldimand County began separate registers for marriages and burials in 1851. Baptisms were kept as statistical values only.

A third register (County Marriage Register) was started in 1858 running to 1869, due to new government regulations. The Haldimand County Clerk continued to record marriages in his previous register creating what one would think would be duplicate records. Not so. In fact there are many marriages that are recorded in one register and not in the other, making it important to check the records transcribed in this book, and also the "County Marriage Register". The 1858-1869 County Marrage Registers are available separately.

This publication includes a transcription the original Haldimand County Marriage and Burial registers, 1851-1865.
